The following paper is a summary of three specific videos with key highlights on how they relate to education as well as a summary of global society and its affects. The videos were definitely learning tools with many viewpoints of the digital era and education.
“State of the Village Report” from Miniature-earth.com
This video took on the concept of if the world consisted of only 100 people with the same make-up of the characteristics we have today. This “miniature world” would be astounding. According to the video, the following is the make-up of the world if the entire world was narrowed to just 100 individuals:
Fourteen of the 100 people cannot read
Only seven people are educated at a secondary level
Only twelve people have a computer with only one-third of those people having an internet connection.
Seventy-five individuals do not have the basic needs of humans such as a bed and a house.
This video is a revelation that the world as a whole is much different than the world we know. Education is not the norm in other countries.
“Mothers Discuss Their Kids’ Digital Lives” from Edutopia.org
This video consisted of mothers discussing how technology affects themselves and how they parent as well as how it affects their children’s lives. Some key points that the mothers mentioned are:
Their children need to have a balance of their technology and the outdoors, etc.
They feel like their children multitask much better than they do themselves.
Their children do not have to research things like they had to but have to consider things like plagiarism.
The parents recognize that their children do need to have exposure to the digital world because that is “the direction that the world is going in”.
There is no longer a need to do things like go to the library because their kids can find information that they need online.
