Listeriosis Although there are countless types of infectious diseases around the world, a great majority of them are preventable. Infectious diseases are disorders caused by organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites (Mayo Clinic, 2016). Listeria is not a commonly mentioned disease, however it has the potential to be deadly when not identified or serious symptoms are overlooked. This foodborne, infectious disease is caused by a gram stain-positive motile bacterium named Listeria monocytogenes. There are several ways to transmit Listeria, take control measures, and identify its reservoirs.

Avoiding food that is not pasteurized, washing the food and cooking it to the recommended temperatures in accordance with FDA guidelines will minimize the risk of exposure.
