MAGNIFICENCE by Estrella Alfon
SUMMARY A man who is thought to be gentle and kind comes to the house of the two children to tutor them with their schoolwork. His name is Vicente. He is a conductor. He remarks to the mother of the two children to become their private teacher when he sees them looking so smart listening to the meeting of the neighborhood association in which the mother is the president. The two children like Vicente so much for his generosity. Their parents trust him because they think he is gentle and kind. They fear nothing when he is around. One evening, Vicente comes earlier than usual. The kids immediately go to him and very excited to tell him about the pencils he gave them. As they go along with the tutorial, Vicente asks Oscar, the young boy to get him a glass of water. When Vicente is alone with the young innocent girl, he makes her trust him and then he hold her up to sit on his lap. The young girl starts to feel uncomfortable. She then twists her body to take a look at the man's face. It is sweaty and looks strange. The young girl jumps away from the man. The mother comes in holding in her hand a glass of sarsaparilla. She then throws him out of the house with multiple slaps. The mother takes the young girl a bath. She puts the clothes into the garbage and then she asks her daughter to throw the pencils away. She then puts her to sleep.
THEME The story "Magnificence" conveys two things; trust and motherhood. It shows that it takes nothing to trust anyone, but being careless of giving trust can bring harm. The story also suggests that even the calmest mother can turn into a monster when her child is abused.
