Literacy Bag Essay
I firmly believe that home is the first classroom and parents are the first teachers. Parents who read to their children every day and talk about whey they are reading together, promote a joy of reading and increase literacy, as well as academic achievement. Thus the reason why next week we will start sending literacy bags home with students.
Our literacy bags are thematic and strongly correlated with the work that we are doing in the classroom. The purpose of this literacy bag is to encourage your child to continue developing the skills that are being taught in class and also to help show you what they are learning in class. Typically, the literacy bags will go home on Mondays and are to be returned on Fridays. When your child brings home a literacy bag, I strongly encourage you to help your child complete the activities at home and to return the literacy bag on the assigned due date. The goal is that you and your child would read one book per night and that you would complete the corresponding activity. I realize that some nights it may not be possible for you and your child to read one of the books in the literacy bag. Please know that the purpose of these bags are to increase your child’s knowledge, and it is not mandatory that every book was read, and every activity completed. With that said, however, I strongly encourage that you and your student try very hard to read as many of these books as possible, because you are only benefiting their education by doing so.
Please make sure all books and materials are returned in the literacy bag. Each literacy bag will have a Materials List, a Permission Slip, and a Parent Feedback Form. If there are lost or damaged materials, please indicate as such on the feedback form so they can replaced for the next student. We want you and your student to enjoy these literacy bags and not find them to be a hassle or extra work.
