Literacy Coach Reflection
When I think about a fantastic literacy coach, I think of several different strengths that they hold. I feel that they should be able to support teachers of all grade levels. They would be required to help teachers reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses, provide them with feedback and resources, observe their teaching, and demonstrate lessons. I also believe that they should be very knowledgeable in the content and background in the reading and writing process. It is important that they understand the curriculum, intervention process, and instructional strategies that they are instructing others to do. I also feel that they should be comfortable in varying modes of instruction and helping with decisions while providing feedback and guidance. Lastly, I think it is most important to help create trusting relationships with the teachers in the building and creating a learning community that is safe, fun, and encouraging.
During my time acting as literacy coach, I helped with a first year teacher on my Kindergarten team. I helped her with classroom management, grouping for small groups, RTI, testing, teaching strategies, and organization. Acting as her literacy coach made me feel a much closer connection to her and I honestly felt like I helped her in a lot of different areas. Throughout the process I did well in some areas

Again, I feel that the biggest struggle was trying to balance my actual job and trying to carry the load of another job role. I also think it would be greatly beneficial to take the summer organization course prior to this course. I hear that it gives a lot of tips on how to be a literacy coach and the role that you play. I think with the experience of that class may have given me a better understanding of what exactly I need to do as a literacy coach, especially if there is not one in the building for you to compare

I contribute to planning by giving verbal and written feedback as well as going through children’s books to see how well the children have done on an activity. All the information that is fed back helps the teacher plan things for the next lesson helping them to get the correct pitch. I contribute to delivering the lesson by making sure I have read and understood the lesson plans, whilst having all the equipment available beforehand. Through close working relationships we have developed verbal and non verbal communication skills that enables us to work together to deliver a lesson. I also deliver support to whole class activities, small groups and individuals on a 1:1 basis. I contribute to the review of learning activities by being hands on and suggesting and putting forward my own ideas.…

The most vivid memory I have of writing is back in the tenth grade. I had the best teacher ever in regards to writing. I used to view writing as a senseless waste of time. Writing, in my opinion, at the time was always noted to be formal and boring; however, my tenth grade English teacher, Mrs. Perez, changed my whole perception of writing and how it affects humanity. One day after class she pulled me aside and recommended a book known as, “His Dark Materials,” which is about a young girl who, with her allies, fought for the discovery of a dark substance called the “Dust.” The book single handedly altered my mental picture of writing and creativity. Writing can be about anything in the universe, and the possibilities are endless. The main point, however, which ties everything together, is imagination. One’s imagination can truly be defined as infinite to the power of infinite, because it contains numerous amounts of details and features on life and the world itself. How does this tie to writing one may ask. Well an elaborate imagination helps to create an elaborate piece of writing. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”…

Planning: As a teaching assistant, I assist the teacher in planning for lessons by first having an informal discussion with the teacher in order to determine what the learning objectives are for the upcoming topics, so both I and the teacher know what the learning outcomes are and what is expected of the children. If I sometimes miss work the teacher sometimes emails me with a breakdown of lesson plans for the week so I can prepare for it and so I know what has been covered in the days I was absent. During this discussion I am able to put forth my ideas on how best I think the topic should be delivered and what groups of children I should sit next to provide additional support as they may struggle the most. Discussing and planning the activities beforehand gives me an idea of what needs to be done before the lesson and during the lesson. By doing this it helps me be in control of my group as I know what needs to be done.…

I have enjoyed tutoring students through the Literacy Corps for nearly two years. The program has helped push me outside of my comfort zone by leading and teaching students. Without challenging myself, I would never have been able to establish a connection with the many students and teachers in the Syracuse area that I have today. I greatly value these connections and relationships, which have helped further my learning experience in college.…

Every week at a nearby elementary school, I tutor children from kindergarten to sixth grade as a part of their YMCA after school care program. Typically, I work with the same group of students to finish their math homework, work on a project for social studies, or help them sound out new words. By watching them thrive in a positive environment and develop a love for learning, they constantly teach me new things. After being at school all day and dealing with ample amounts of stress, their innocent and bright minds cause me to ground myself and realize what is at the core of all of my hard work in academics: a thirst for knowledge. Perhaps the most rewarding thing has been witnessing them improve dramatically, such as being able to read a word with ease that we sounded out multiple times the previous week, with a smile on their face and a new sense of confidence and accomplishment. Steadfastly teaching them that by working hard and not giving up they can reach their goals, it leaves me with such a proud feeling when I see them putting it into action. Tutoring has been a two-way street: the children have impacted my life in a positive and meaningful way just like I have impacted…

The essay that I believe could become greatly improved upon with more revision is my research paper, “Who’s Putting the Care in Foster Care.” I think I felt a little under pressure from the daunting shadow of finals that December brings, reflecting on my essay as a mass amount of careless errors. With more time, I could not only more thoroughly proofread my essay, as I should have done previously, but also expand certain lacking areas of my essay. These lacking areas target my introduction and conclusion. The beginning and closing of an essay has always been a struggle for me, however, for some reason it was exceptionally more difficult for me on my research paper. In addition, a key point for improvement is in what was facading as a hook, “All children are deserving of growing up in a safe and nurturing home, but as we all know, this is not the reality of what happens.” This is…

My memory of my how I became literate is and always will be a part of me that I will never forget. I suppose I heard the sounds around me and connected them with emotions. Crying, I noticed, got a quick response from my parents, and usually some food. My communication development was identical to every other child learning to talk. Listening. But everyone has a story behind their literacy. Mine was one day, when we were driving to the grocery store, with the radio turned on, my jam turned on. It was the ABC’s. This song was unexpected, not only because of its difference in the nature of the regular pop songs, but that it was a new song altogether. Nonetheless, I began to rock along with the catchy tune of the song. I longed for more and demanded it…

My literacy journey had a very interesting beginning. I am a first generation Mexican American, and as being first generation my first language is Spanish, everyone I interacted with when I was young was family or Hispanic. I picked up on some English from watching kid shows but I never really knew what the words meant. Prior to starting preschool, the school got me and my mother into an ELL summer class to get a head start on the school year. Up until around first grade or so I always had to meet with the ELL teacher to check on my progress and make sure I was doing okay in school.…

I play a key role in supporting the children with their activities after the teacher’s input. I usually support smaller, lower ability groups. I find out from the teacher about our activities beforehand, how is the lesson organized and or what is my specific role in the learning activity. I would prepare the resources needed for the particular lesson ahead, often while the teacher is providing the input for the children and do necessary photocopying or sticking pupil’s work into their books.…
