The characters in Matilda are an important demonstration why literacy is important in a child’s life. Matilda’s parents do not find literacy as an important factor in a child’s life they rather focus on television and game shows to get their education. Children need literacy to understand the world and help them grow into successful adults. If children were to follow the lead of Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood they would lack of education and have a misleading view of people and the world. With children having positive influences in teachers and leaders like Ms. Honey it teaches them that education and literacy is what will make them successful in life. Children with positive influences in their learning, development learn to love literacy and how to use it to be successful, but children who face unsupported negative influence have a hard time with education and give up quickly because they are told it is not important in the real world. Literacy is and always will be important in a child’s life for them to learn and grow to be successful. This idea is very clear when looking at Matilda’s Influences had she not had positive influences like Mrs. Phelps and Ms. Honey she probably would have never got an education and become the educated well-rounded person she grew into.
