Literary Analysis
Conflict theorists of sociology state there are some things in life that are inevitable.
Whether it's facing a family death or encountering a traumatic episode, this downward spiral happens to everyone. Alice Walker's "The Flowers", John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums, and Roald Dahl's "The landlady" have unintentionally correlated their main characters to a specific theme. All three protagonist's naive and careless behavior resulted in a tragic misfortune where innocence was unexpectedly taken by the cruel hands of life's remorseless nature.
In Alice Walker's short story "The Flowers"; the protagonist is a 10 yr old girl named
Myop. Myop is perceived as an innocent sweet little girl lacking knowledge due to her ripe age which defines her naive behavior. She has been doing what she enjoys most on a beautiful day: picking flowers for her mother. As she ventures on into the woods, she senses something peculiar. She notices the cadaver and is quickly taken back but still seems intrigued. When she notices the noose she sets her flowers down ending the story. Myop has realized at that moment that she has lost her innocence. John Steinbeck's “The Chrysanthemums" tells the story of a thirtyfive year old woman who is married to a rancher named Henry Allen. One day a 'tinker' arrives and taps into Elisa's repressed passion and desire to manipulate her out of a pot. He flatters her ability to plant and raise flowers, but in reality could care less. Elisa is taken in and gives him a pot with some of her flowers only to see later that evening the tinker has tossed her
idolized flowers to the curb. The author portrays Elisa nurturing the flowers as if they were her own children. The story ends with Elisa crying softly.
