In Ruta Sepetys historical fiction novel Salt to the Sea the four protagonists, Joana, Florian, Emilia, and Alfred, make the perilous journey to the Wilhelm Gustloff where they hope to travel to a different part of Germany to escape The Soviet Union. Once they get on the ship, they think they are safe from death, but the ship sinks and takes many under with it. Each of the protagonists sacrifices greatly throughout the novel. One lesson this novel teaches is that sacrifice is needed for survival even if it means the sacrificer won’t survive.

Her back arched. ‘No!’ she screamed. ‘Go back!’ ” Ingrid went onto the ice to make sure it is safe for the others, but a plane bombed, the ice cracked, she fell, and died. Before this, she warned the others, before they get killed as well. This connects to the theme because Ingrid gives up her own life so the group can go on. Even though she knew she would die, she saved the group in the process. A good example of sacrifice throughout the book is on page 272, “ ‘I’m not sure if I remember,’ I whispered. ‘Maybe Friedrich? Or Fritz?’” Joana lied to a soldier on the Gustloff about knowing Florian and telling where he was. By doing this, she saved his life while endangering her own.
On page 336 Ruta Sepetys writes, “Emilia stared at us from above, then quickly pushed the wandering boy into the boat on top of us.” This line shows that Emilia gave up her chance to live when the people in the lifeboat said only “one more,” but Emilia shoved the wandering boy, Klaus, into the lifeboat instead of herself.
