Literary Analysis of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” Mark Twain, a folktale writer, presents a man by the name of Simon Wheeler, who tells a story about a friend of his and that friends name is Smiley. Smiley really loves to gamble, and will always place a bet on anything that has to do with competition. He finds a frog and trains him to jump really high so he can gamble with the frog and earn money, but the bet does not turn out that way. The author uses setting in a way that creates the mood of the story as well as builds up to show the characters personalities. Although, the whole story took place in Calaveras County, the first setting sets up the mood of the story. As the author walked into the bar and saw Wheeler he
thought to himself, “... the bar-room stove of the old, dilapidated tavern in the ancient mining camp of Angel’s,” Establishes the mood as gloomy, because the bar is not in the best condition and the bar is also inside an old mining camp. One day, Simley decided to catch a frog and use the frog for his gambles, so he said “ cal’lated to educate him; and so he never done nothing for three months but set in his backyard and learn that frog to jump.” Implies that with setting switching to Smiley’s house that he will do anything in order to win his bets. Even if taking a wild animal and to train this animal to become the best, Smiley is really dedicated into his gambles.
