Literary Analysis Of The Raven
This is a literary analysis of the poem “The Raven” By: Edgar Allen Poe in the following paragraphs as the reader, you will discuss the use of negative diction and imagery, negative emotions or moods and also the situations which show a challenge between good and evil. As for the first paragraph, it shows the thought process that Edgar had as he spoke to the raven in a negative attitude and mood.
In the first stanza he said that “While I pondered weak and weary” (Line 1). In saying he pondered weak and weary this is negative mood. In a delusional state of mind, he said wearily and he was weak as he mourned the loss of his dear Lenore. After this he was in his study and there was tapping at the door where he opens it and says “Darkness there …show more content…
In the sentence the word, fearing was stating that he was scared of what he did not know as he had not truly accepted the loss of his love and the tapping on the door brought him a sense of hope, but also brought fear, But this wasn't his only use this poem was filled with an immense amount of words. Where the raven spoke and said, but a single word “Nevermore” (Line 48). The word nevermore in the dictionary means never again so when he asks the raven will I see my wife again and the response being nevermore it stirs about tender emotions. He refers to “...Melancholy burden bore” (Line 64) when Poe says melancholy he is expressing his prolonged gloomy state of mind do to his wife dying and leaving him in lament. Although he used an immense amount of negative diction it was not limited as he also used negative imagery. Where he said “All my soul within me burning” (Line 31) this is negative as he is saying that is feeling that makes him feel as though he is being burned alive. The next use of a gothic element was “velvet violet lining” (Line 76) the use of the color provided it was violet showed sorrow or sadness as a dark color. For the final example of gothic elements and reason why this is a dark romanticism poem he says “fowl whose fiery eyes now burned “ ( Line 74) in this he says the bird has a trait of which its eyes pierced his soul in a way as if they were fire they burned through him in a sense.
