English 4
Mrs. Bodine
Due: April 2, 2008.
Directions: Write a one-and-a-half page essay analyzing no more than one literary element (topics are on bottom).
Review pages 180-216 in your purple Elements of Language book that you have in the classroom. These pages will provide an example paper and we will discuss the paper in class. There are two examples of a literary analysis paper within these pages.
Your essay will be graded using the 6-trait writing rubric. Papers are worth only 50% if turned late, up to a week then they are zero credit after a week. This is a minimum requirement and, so it needs to be completed on time.
Your essay must include all of the following:
1. A creative opener. Avoid: “In the novel …show more content…
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley...” 2. MLA format. 3. A clear and concise thesis that is an opinion rather than a fact. 4. The title of the novel and the author can be found within the first paragraph. 5. Discusses one literary element. 6. Provides evidence to support main idea. 7.
Includes transitional sentences. 8. Must include at least THREE IN-TEXT CITATIONS—which means quotes from the novel. The quotes must be cited correctly. 9. Concludes by restating the thesis statement in a different way. 10. A peer-edited rough draft must be stapled to the back of the finished piece. We will be peer-edited on Thursday during class. Have a complete rough draft typed by this day.
