This passage is occurs right in the middle of the first chapter of the book Black
And White By Eric Walters. It is in first person point of view coming from Thomas's point of view. There is no previous chapter however, the introduction to this novel simply
Steven, the best friend of Thomas, convincing him to stay and watch. The chapter after, however, revolves around the ride back home following the basketball match.
Significance:
There a couple of significant points in this paragraph in relation to the novel. To start off, this has allowed the plot to move forward. This is where Thomas had first seen and heard of Denyse. Likewise, the gym was the first place they met as well as what caused them to speak to each other on their way home when …show more content…
Denyse was dropped at her house. It is clear the author used this passage as a way of developing the plot helping it reach its climax by using this passage as a starting point for how the entire story unfolds. Another significant point is this passage is that it had allowed Thomas to be more considerate and thoughtful.
We see Thomas automatically seeing girls basketball at a very low level just because they are feminine. This passage helped him understand that he in fact was incorrect and slowly but surely, he develops maturity.
Moreover, this passage was the reason he later went on to many places such as the church where he never dreamed he would go there again.
Detail:
Literary devices in this passage are introduced with sarcasm which happens to include a bit of foreshadowing as well. It is clear for the reader what Thomas meant when he said “would I be here if she wasn't?” Likewise, there are plenty of instances where imagery is being used. The author uses them in attempt to help the reader visualize the action that is going on. For instance, the statement “The other team's centre had to be half a head taller.” is a great example of imagery written by the author. The author made the entire passage occur in the basketball court in attempt to make the reader understand more about gender equality. We know that girls basketball team was looked down by almost the whole school and so the author chose this place, and personalities like Tom and Steve, to distinguish what was right from what was
wrong.
Steven and Thomas had two different thoughts of girls basketball, the first understanding that it is just as good as the boys and the latter really having a one sided view of things. Tom's thinking was simply that girls can't play but after watching the match, he realized he was incorrect. Once he got a better understanding after spending time with one of the players, he went to another of the girls basketball game with the person who brought him there in the first place, Steven.
Thomas starts off by completely writing the girls basketball team off because they are girls. However, just a few minutes into the game, he already knew he was way off. He asked Steven “Who is she?” after Denyse dribbled through the team and scored.
Steven responded by saying “Her name is Denyse.” Thomas immediately knew he was mistaken and he kept getting proven wrong which made him completely change his thought on girls basketball team.
The word “tip” has many different meanings and can be put into many different contexts. The tip that is most commonly used is “the edge of an item”. However, in this instance, it is the action of putting the ball in play by throwing it up between two opponents. Basically, in basketball, the word tip is used because the objective is to see who could get to the ball first, get the first touch and pass it to their teammates.
Theme/Ideas:
An important idea that is present in this passage and the novel is the fact that the girls basketball team is not being given as much respect as the boys simply because of the difference in gender. Almost the entire school thinks low of girls basketball team unlike the thought of the boys basketball team. Thomas was one of those, however,
Steven informed him by saying " some of these girls can play," and upon watching the game, Thomas gained a much better understanding and starting seeing both genders equally. This is seen as Thomas willingly went to another one of Denyse's basketball matches later on. This idea has allowed Thomas to start understanding that gender doesn't matter, specifically in basketball, and that girls are just as good as boys at basketball. Interpretation:
This passage relates to the current situation in our society. People are disregarding others because they are of a specific gender, race, colour, etc. In this passage, we have
Thomas disregarding the girls basketball team because they are girls and nothing to do with the quality on the court. Likewise, despite the fact that women's World Cup (a soccer cup in which men's version would generate over 34 million views in the finals) is currently taking place, is still is being disregarded and has just over 13 million views in the finals just because it is womens. Clearly, the author wanted to make the reader understand and relate to the current issues we face today in the society.
