The poem “Oh Captain, My Captain” was not only about the end of the Civil War, but was also about the death of Lincoln. Many people were very emotionally unstable when he passed. He had helped end the war, and had freed the slaves. His death was a very depressing time for all.…
“The defendant is not guilty, but somebody in this room is” (Lee 271). Atticus, in his closing argument, attempts to convey that Tom Robinson is innocent, and the Ewell’s have done a wrong deed. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates the theme of treating and respecting everyone as an individual in Atticus’s closing argument by using rhetorical devices such as repetition, analogies, and allusions.…
“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how the plot progression of the story was closely related to the character development. Lee used Jean Louise, also known as “Scout” as a main model of character development, as she grows through her understandings of racism, how to handle social situations and her intelligence . The plot progression throughout the novel was very close in relationship of bildungsroman in the characters personal stories. This book being fiction is not true but it depicts how life was during the time period of the 1930’s. The characters also are very close to portraying common people of the time in Macon County of Alabama.…

Courage is characterized as mental or moral strength to surpass notions of fear. As demonstrated by Atticus Finch and Mrs Dubose in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the development of courage gives the character’s strength and courage to hold their heads high, while fearing none. Harper Lee depicts the theme of courage incalculable amount of times, detailing courage as “ when you know you’re licked before you being, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Chapter 11, Page 124) All of the characters have an alternate kind of perspective of what courage is exactly, which will be examined in depth.…
The verdict of a court case lies squarely on Atticus’ closing statement that needs to be powerful in order to win. In “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, a court case takes Maycomb by surprise. A case between an African American man and a poor white woman makes for a difficult situation for its residents. The jury needs to be able to analyze the information and evidence given from the witnesses to give an honest conclusion. Depending on how the jury swings, it could put an innocent man’s life at risk. Atticus Finch needs to use many forms of strong rhetoric when giving his closing argument to convince the defendant not guilty.…

“O Captain! My Captain!” is a poem written by Walt Whitman. Whitman wrote the poem to honor Abraham Lincoln after his assassination in 1865 and describes him as a captain sailing his ship. The “ship” is the divided United States, and it is enduring a “storm”, which is the American Civil War. Lincoln eventually brought the Union and Confederate States back into one nation. Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and reunited the country but was seemingly destined to die afterward.…

This is a first person autobiography narration about how the author, who was of African descent, is confined to slavery. His account about his life on the ship is very traumatic and distressing as the masters flogged the slaves severely, mentally and emotionally tortured the slaves, and some were nearly suffocated as they were not even permitted to stay on the deck to breathe in fresh air. The author felt like dying would be better than living his life as a slave. Finally, he writes about how he became his own master, becoming a freeman from being a slave – which in fact was the happiest day of his life.…
Harper Lee wasn’t popular in her early life. She did however become very popular and well known when one of her books, To Kill a Mockingbird got published. Once the book was published, she gained lots of money and fame. She didn’t use the money that she gained from the book to live in high class society. So she avoided the spotlight by living as a middle class person and dressing as one. There weren’t any fancy clothes, living conditions and she didn’t use her money to become famous. (Listland 1). She politely refused to talk with journalists. That was another way Harper Lee stayed away from the spotlight and fame. Harper Lee was the best person to become famous for avoiding the spotlight.…
This memoir was has many issues , but he main issues are that Frederick Douglass has a very difficult time freeing himself, mentally and physically, from slavery, and the treatment of slaves as property. The theme is that ignorance keeps one down and keeps one in bondage , and also that knowledge is power. The characters are very complex in the memoir. Captain Anthony , Douglass’s first master and also thought to be his father. Anthony is the clerk for Colonel Lloyd, managing the plantations and the overseers of those plantations. Anthony is a cruel man who takes pleasure in whipping his slaves, especially Douglass’s Aunt Hester. He is called “Captain” because he once piloted ships up the Chesapeake Bay…
Throughout history, the presumption of innocence has been a preventative tactic to prevent the wrongful conviction of innocent people. In this system, the burden of proof is on the way who declares the action, not the one who denies. However, the distinction between guilt and innocence is dependent upon the agency, the capacity to exert power, of the convicted. The move from innocent to corrupt requires that an action be taken with free will. In Henry James’ “Daisy Miller: A Study,” Daisy Miller suffers due to the ambiguity of innocence and guilt applied to her as a person. Through the use of dehumanizing imagery, the narrative structure which objectifies Daisy, and indirect characterization,…
Transcendentalist View of Bartleby the Scrivener Actions The Transcendentalists and the Dark Romantics were the two major literary groups of America's literary coming of age. The transcendentalists believed in transcending everyday, physical human experiences and objects, in order to determine the reality of God, the universe, and the self. Transcendentalists, led by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, believed in the good of man, and held a very optimistic view of the world and mankind. This directly clashed with the Dark Romantics; they felt that everything had a darker, more evil side, and the depravity of man. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, and Herman Melville were the leading men of the Dark Romantics. Although both sides shared the same Romantic beliefs, they differed greatly on their views of the goodness of man. This clash in belief results in distinguishable differences in the texts of both sides, yet each one can be applied to the other. Bartleby, of Bartleby the Scrivener, exhibited many transcendental qualities and the l results of those beliefs; therefore, the Transcendentalists would view Bartleby as one of their own kind.…
