The first literary device Poe uses in Tell-Tale Heart is time of day. Although not specific, “Tell-Tale Heart” seems to be set within a house shared by the old man and his killer. In (538:1) he uses the literary device of time of day; “And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and open it-oh so gently!”. Another time of day is in (538:1); “And this I did for seven long nights- every night just at midnight”.

“A shriek, the neighbor immediately called the police even though the neighbor could not see the inside of the old man’s room since it was really dark. “ A knocking at the street door went down to open it with a light heart…”. The neighbor had called the police once it heard the shriek, showing a good action in relation toward his/ her neighbor. In a chatting mood, the narrator answers the door only to find three policemen who had come to investigate because a neighbor heard the old man’s shriek and alerted the police to the possibility of a murder. He shows the policemen the house and confidently allows them to search it before bringing out chairs. The social details convinces the policemen that nothing is wrong, and they sit down on the chairs and chat with him. About the mad illness of the narrator it seems the condition of the people in the social time. I think the protagonist suffered from this condition.
Allan Poe uses the literary device time of day of setting to create a dark tone affecting the mood of the reader. The mood is mysterious, insane, and horrific. However, the unsuspecting behavior of the pilicemen suggests that the narrator has become essentially unaware of his behavior and his surroundings.
