Literary Elements In Enrique's Journey
Nazario’s Art through Words
Behind a well developed and interesting story is the author’s use on words, so when Sonia Nazario wrote Enrique’s Journey she included many literary elements to engage the readers. Moreover in any good novel the author intrigued us with setting, POV, characterization, semantics, and mood..etc. Each book has a different story, yet all include literary elements it just depends on how the author will use them. In literature there is no wrong or right to it, (at least that is what we are told) for the purpose is to grab the reader's attention. In the novel Enrique’s Journey, Nazario mixes up all these elements and shows us them either directly, or indirectly. Sonia Nazario uses each element at a certain place of the novel so it has a greater impact on the reader, and it helps to make the story more entertaining. More to the ending the author says, “ Lourdes, wide awake, talks to God, and asks for something unthinkable to her before ‘If this is the life he is going to lead, please take him away from me,’ she says. Enrique’s future,she tells God, is out of her hands.”(257). Nazario is outside of the story, yet knows all the thoughts and feeling of Lourdes she explains on how Lourdes is hurt and she has given up on Enriques tragically. Nazario also says, “That night, as the sun sets, Enrique stares across the Rio Grande and at the United States. Its loomy as a mystery. Somewhere over there lives his mother. She has become a mystery, too.”(135). The author tells us indirectly that Enrique is so close to the United States, yet he is unsure what is to come he doesn’t know how his mother looks so it’s a huge risk for him to cross. Nazario knows all the thoughts and feeling of each character therefore making it 3rd person
