She struggles against the ripping force of the ocean current. Her arms are quickly tiring from swimming against it. She relaxes, letting her muscles fall limp. Within seconds, she is pushed out to sea. The people on the beach are so small, little tiny ants against a white sand backdrop. The tall condo skyscrapers are now tiny Lego buildings. The kids hollering and music blasting on the beach is faded like a distant memory. She will die out here, she’s sure of it. Her daughter won’t have a mother’s hand to hold when learning to walk. Her husband will be left a widower, forever broken by the loss of his love. She closes her eyes and accepts her fate as she drifts further out to sea. She floats for a long while, the salinity in the water steadily…

"If you know your character's thoughts, the proper vocal and bodily expressions will naturally follow" said by the creator of realist theatre Constantine Stanislavski, is used heavily in the assistance to the portrayal and understanding of the characters in Ray Lawler’s ‘Summer of the Seventeenth Doll’. In the story of “Children of the Sea” the sea holds lots of meaning, and the meaning is very different for each person who is out at sea. For the young man escaping after police raid his radio station, he sees the sea as opportunity. The opportunity to escape a corrupt country and continue his life, but the sea also provides heartache, as this is what separates him from the love of his life. Being at sea also gives the young man hope that one day he can make a better life for himself, as most immigrants flee to America in the hope to live a more promising life. The only way he is able to have some peace with his time at sea, is the notebook he has, where he writes to his love back at home. He tells her of the women on the boat who tell stories and sing, in an attempt to control the seasickness most of them are experiencing. He describes being at sea as lost time, stating in one of his many letters, “sometimes it feels like we have been at sea longer than the many years that I have been on this earth” (14). He is only aware that a day has passed by the raising and setting of the sun. I have always thought of the sea as something beautiful, mysterious even. The sea to me has always provided me with opportunity, the opportunity to experience something new, to explore. But this does not prove…
The theme of a short story is the idea behind the plot of the story. In other words, it is not the actual events that happened throughout the story, but what the story is telling you. There are certain aspects that enhance the theme such as the elements of the story. These elements include but are not limited to the setting, the point of view, and symbolism. “The Welcome Table” by Alice Walker (1970) communicates to her readers how religious faith prevailed against the racists views of others while using certain elements to contribute to her theme.…
Have you ever thought about why young girls are so ready to grow up and become sexually active? If you haven’t you might should think about it. What is the real reason? Why is it so easy for teenagers to give up their life to be sexually active and grow up? They don’t know the consequences of growing up too fast and trying things out too early. In the story, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, the author, Joyce Carol Oates uses the plot to reveal the struggles, dangers, and mental persuasions of teenage girls sexual innocence and becoming adult women too early.…
At the beginning of the novel of the Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the plot is triggered by Trujillo who was the dictator of Dominican Republic during 1930s and 40s. The curse of fuku was also closely related to Trujillo. The whole book was talking about how Oscar, Lola, Belicia and Abelard and this family fought against the curse of fuku which was caused by Trujillo. By unconventionally using a writing method of magic realism, the author Junot Diaz wrote about a real history of Dominican Republic during Trujillo’s dictatorship period and the lives of Dominican people who live in America nowadays. Magical realism allows Diaz to bring supernatural elements to the story. Even though this novel has many magic elements, the core of it is trying to express the Dominican Republic’s or Latin American social reality and reality of people’s lives and the magic elements are only the technique of expression to reflect the realism.…
The main ideas of the period of Romanticism were largely based on self expression, free will and the ability to act on that will, spontaneity, individualism and the prospect to shape your own life. The thoughts of the realists pertained to more concrete aspects of the here and now and emphasize that the things that matter are unavoidable truths. In the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, his ideas of human potential and self exploration towards becoming part of the proclaimed freedoms and opportunities of America precisely sum up the ideas of the Romantic period. These ideas not only closely relate to the slaves of the time that were going through the same injustices of Douglas, but many lower class divisions of society in all of the world. The works of the realist authors focus more on common people, especially ones with flaws and imperfections. There is more of concern with social problems and the idea of being materialistic in the works of realists. In Ibsen's Hedda Gabler, Hedda was extremely wealthy and forced to wed below her class making her very bored and her happy with her situation. In this society there was nothing that she could do about this situation. Women, much like slaves were treated unfairly in society, so like Douglas, Hedda was part of some thing that she wanted out of. The difference between her and Douglas is that she couldn't really do anything about her situation.…
In this paper, I examine the connection between judgments of fact and moral judgments in an attempt to discern whether moral judgments are simply a subset of judgments of fact. I will look mostly at an argument posed by many moral realists that takes moral facts to be “supervenient natural facts which are independent of our theorizing about them”1 and in which moral judgments are determined by objective facts which relate to human flourishing or pleasure and pain. I will also, though, take a look at the fact/value gap and determine the effect on the connection between moral judgments and judgments of fact of an attempt to close this gap.…
One of the most controversial arguments is deciding whether war is helpful or more harmful than helpful; however, the story “War” by Luigi Pirandello and the poem Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind by Stephen Crane both reveal realistic outlooks on the topic. In “War”, Pirandello focuses in on a small group of travelers that are having trouble contemplating their children’s choice to go to war. One couple in specific, who creates the plot of the story, can’t cope with the death of their only son that occurred while he was deployed. Many different perspectives are provided from the other passengers as they all share one thing in common; they all have children at war. Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind is a short poem about the many horrors of war and how there is no good that comes from it. Whether war is right or wrong, it is something that will happen regardless of beliefs. “War” and Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind both promote realism in a topic that typically brings controversy. Realism is revealing the true side of something or learning how to accept a situation for what it really is in the least fantasized way.…
The truth to a writer who uses magical realism is like a sunshade over a blooming flower. The flower may still live, but its beauty isn’t as magnificent. Truth needs to be somewhat apparent in a work, but a writer using magical realism needs creativity. Magical realism may not create a truthful story, but one with meaning.…
Early Renaissance art and literature brought real life depictions to print form. Artists and writers alike began to pay close attention to things such as social class, social interaction, human society, personal experiences, lifestyles, and individual personalities. The focus was on real people living very real lives. This wasn’t a look at the general but a look deeper into the details of individual life and how people interacted while living in this time period. The time’s social concerns and values were brought out through these various forms, giving insight to future generations what life was like during the Early Renaissance for the common man. Great writers and artist give people today in the 21st Century a glimpse into the life of Renaissance people; only a glimpse, allowing us to draw our own conclusions from the art and literature. This depiction of real life people in great detail is known as Social Realism and paves the way for future Renaissance minds down the road, even to today’s modern society.…
