* What is Literature? * writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays. * Generic Classification * Prose * the ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse. * Fiction * the class of literature comprising works of imaginative narration, especially in prose form. * Non fiction * the branch of literature comprising works of narrative prose dealing with or offering opinions or conjectures upon facts and reality, including biography, history, and the essay ( opposed to fiction and distinguished from poetry and drama ). * Drama * a composition in prose or verse presenting in dialogue or pantomime a story involving conflict or contrast of character, especially one intended to be acted on the stage; a play. * Poetry * the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.
