This essay (Understanding through the arts) is the foreword to a special issue of Unitas, a U.S.T. journal dealing with the subject of the search for national identity through the arts.

* Explanation or synopsis We are today going through a crucial but exciting period in our history. We are engaged in the difficult adventure of shaping our nation’s identity. Because of this, all the resources of our people should be mobilized. And arts are the most important solution in this search. Through art, we get evidence of how our ancestors lived and died. Art knows no diversity of language since it speaks directly to the senses so even we encounter language barrier, understanding can be more easily reached. Through art, we gain a notion of how the different races and cultures operated: though art, we become more receptive to their ideas. The moment we realize that the differences are genuine, we make an important step toward understanding our fellowmen. The auditive and visual arts are important too, it penetrate the intelligence and the sensitiveness of the spectator or listener because it help us become acquainted with each other or to get intuitive knowledge of one another. But art has its glorious mission; it is to promote unity, harmony and peace. It should not weigh down the soul and nail it to the earth. Rather, art should lend wings to the soul so that it can rise above its importance and insignificant. And get us to God because God is the only union that counts.
Only in this way can the splendid vision of St. Paul be literally realized. “For the invisible things of him, from the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made: his eternal power also, and divinity.” This means that God knows everything.

The arts section displays attractive paintings of personalities in the tribe, animals, foods, monuments and groups. They point to the fact that creativity in America is not just a modern-day occurrence but something that existed even before the country was officially founded. The painters used bright colors, some of which are symbolic of the message being passed. Information gained from an interview with one of the natives indicates that the tribes use paintings and drawing as an important way of communication and performing various rituals. They also painted various parts of their bodies as a sacred practice in their tribes. Just like in contemporary society, paintings are more than just pieces of art to entertain and display a painter’s creativity but something that has the power to teach, inspire, entertain and preserve information. Therefore, observing paintings and drawings during this event was the most interesting aspect of the show as far as the display of elements that cover beauty is…

As time has passed, the many events that make up world history have transformed society and subsequently the purpose of art. The birth of art occurred around 25,000 years ago and between that time and now, many historical events had caused the purpose of art to change throughout different eras. These different events prove to impact the art of the eras that they occur in, and often many events will happen and art will constantly be changing. One can draw similarities and differences between artists responses to the world around them from two separate eras. Artists responses to their world can be specific yet common, and the purposes of art from these artists change as time moves forward.…

Artworks have played an indelible work to the lives of humanity. The creative nature in Artists is a complex matter to define. The uncertainties in the intrinsic nature in art lay difficult aspects that can only be answered by values, themes and skills depicted in an artist artwork. Apart from playing the intricate psychological effect on humans, the artworks have been used as a tool of expression that has been revered and uniquely preserved for future generation. Among some of the most revered modern forms of artwork has included Chicano Art that had a core relationship to Las Carpas, Indigenismo, rascuachismo and other forms of performance art.…

The story opens in the month of January with the oft-quoted line: “None of them knew the color of the sky” (Crane 57). “Them” means four individuals who are aboard a dinghy, having been shipwrecked: the captain with an injured arm, the correspondent, the cook, and Billie, the oiler. Except for Billie, the rest of the characters remain unnamed. The oiler and the correspondent row the dinghy, while the captain provides directions and the cook bails water out of the boat.…

Art and the Racial Struggle in America have always been linked. Art has been used as a tool in the ongoing racial struggle in America, and has helped to unify, divide and define all Americans in some form. Art itself has always been a difficult term to define, but I believe that based on any one persons definition, it can be an antidote or a form of resistance against certain kinds of discrimination. W.E.B. Du Bois make a strong argument for the role in which art plays in the racial struggle and defines art as “propaganda”, even in the face of purist. It is because of my exploration of Du Bois’s article, “Criteria of Negro Art”, that I firmly believe art and the racial struggle are linked.…

We've had a fantastic eight weeks of delving into the study of the human experience. The use of art, music, literature, history, language, philosophy, and religion to document our experience in the world is something man has always done, and it's something we still do today. Understanding our human experience allows us to feel connected to those that came before us and those that are yet to come. As we've learned about the meaning, history, societal roles, and disciplines of each art form we've come to realize that they are connected because of our human experience, regardless of the time period, the people, or the culture, our experiences and the way we attempt to explain them connect us all. Academic and artistic contributions made throughout…
