literature analyzation essay
One of America’s founding fathers had a great influence in American History and what it is to be American. Benjamin Franklin wrote his Autobiography as a letter addressed to his son in two parts. Franklin knew they would be public and wanted people to read them because he felt he was worth following as an example. He grew up in a big family where his dad did not make a large income. He worked his way up to become more knowledgeable and eventually be a founding father of The United States of America. He wants the rest of Americans to follow his example he set forth as his life autobiography. His life, his mistakes, his journey was meant for others to see. To be American was to be like Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin was the youngest son of the youngest son for five generations back. He was from Boston, New England and in his autobiography he discusses how he grew up. He only went to one year of grammar school but always was reading. He could not remember a time where he could not read, so he shows that you do not need to go to school to be an intelligent person. To be American to him was to soak up what knowledge you could despite your situation. Franklin did not have a rich privileged childhood, he talks about how he did not go to college on page 252 “But my father in the meantime, from a View of Expense of a College Education which, having so large a family, he could not well afford.” and he also failed out of a school for Writing and Arithmetic, and made no progress in it. Though that did not stop him from becoming an educated man and America gave him the opportunity to become more. Benjamin Franklin sees Americans as leaders. He considers himself to always have been a leader. On page 252 he discusses his natural leadership “…and when in a Boat or canoe with other boys I was commonly allowed to govern, especially in any case of difficultly; and upon other cases I was generally a Leader among the boys…” So he wants Americans to follow his example

"The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin", written by Gordon S. Wood, is a selective study of aspects of the Founding Father's life. In his book, Wood's purpose is to portray the lesser known details of Benjamin Franklin's life and his transformation from a Loyalist of the Royal Crown, to a patriot who would unknowingly become one of the most massively symbolic and significant figures in American history. Wood reveals that before he was a passionate American revolutionist, Franklin passionately believed in the British Empire and tirelessly attempted to appease both American and British interests. Wood uses effective historical evidence, not commonly known today, to depict all faces of Benjamin Franklin. It is through precise investigation of the book's strengths and weaknesses that the reader will determine the…

His confidence in American growth and strength led to significant political and scientific breakthroughs that still continue to be used in modern times. Though he may not have been recognized widely at the time, his diligence to succeed outweighed any impediments that he may have faced.…

Franklin” because he writes what he thinks, especially about his past experiences, rather than just telling the events as they happened. Part two of his writing, written in 1783, completely devotes this section to what his vision is for a moral, just, and virtuous individual. “The Autobiography” establishes in literary form the first example of the fulfillment of the American Dream. He writes of the possibilities of life in America through his own rise from the lower middle class as a youth to one of the most admired men in the world as an adult. Furthermore, he states that he achieved his success through a solid work ethic. For instance he writes, “It was about this time that I conceived the bold and arduous project of arriving at moral perfection” (Franklin 307). He wants have that American dream, so he comes up with the thirteen virtues to help him. He proved that even undistinguished people can, through industry, become great figures of importance in America in his writings. His “The Autobiography” also reflects idealism. He somewhat writes of intellectual flourishment and political thought and during part two, he is trying to live them out. According to Betsy Erkkila, “while the Revolution is not present as part of the manifest content of Franklin's narrative, it is present as the political or narrative unconscious of Franklin's "Life"--as a scene of social crisis, bloody contest, and challenge to traditional structures of authority in family, society, church, and state” (Erkkila). This meaning that even though it wasn’t spoke of directly, the revolution was desired by Franklin so others could have the American dream and achieve as he…

Before starting this project, we were learning about a time in America’s history when the Patriots came together to strive for the freedom and growth of their country, later known as the Revolutionary War. The Patriots were the brave citizens of the thirteen colonies who fought for America’s freedom from the rule of the British. Many people showed the best of their ability and rose up to be leaders, diplomats, politicians, and more. However, one person in particular laid down the foundation of America and played a key role in the war. This was none other than Benjamin Franklin. Mr. Franklin caught our eye through his many achievements, like the French Alliance of 1778, drafting the Declaration of Independence, and signing all four key documents of America’s development..…

Although his printing career was successful, he had many other accomplishments that make him one of the most influential Founding Fathers in America. A major accomplishment of his was when he successfully negotiated to form an essential military alliance with France in 1778 as the American Revolution progressed, as well as negotiating the Treaty of Paris in 1783 after the Americans emerged victorious in the Revolution. Additionally, Franklin was a significant contributor to the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766. Franklin was appointed to be the first Postmaster General in the U.S. in 1775, and he was one of the five men that drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. One of the things that peaks my interest in Benjamin Franklin and what inspired me to choose him for this essay is his passion for science and his inventions. Before he turned his interest to electricity and conducted his renowned kite-and-key experiment to demonstrate that lightning was a form of electricity, he had previously invented a flexible catheter, a heat-efficient stove, the Armonica, swim fins, and bifocals. Franklin got the nickname the “First American” because he was a genuine polymath and tycoon in the eyes of the public. The last public act that he was involved in was in 1789, when he wrote an anti-slavery treatise. The most interesting fact that I discovered about Franklin is that he was an ardent chess player. Seeing as how I really enjoy playing chess, I found this newfound information quite fascinating. In 1999, Ben was initiated into the United States Chess Hall of Fame and the second oldest chess club in the U.S., The Franklin Mercantile Chess Club in Philadelphia, was named in honor of him. If I was given the opportunity to have a face-to-face encounter with the “First American,” Benjamin Franklin, I would ask him if he thought America would…

Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, is known for his extensive list of accomplishments, including politician, printer, scientist, musician, inventor, and diplomat. He has always been proud of his working class roots after growing up in a poor family. He involves himself with public affairs and causes aimed at improving the lives of others. However, Benjamin Franklin is in no way perfect. He often manipulates people to get what he wants and becomes narcissistic later in life. He establishes myths in his Autobiography that represent American society. Although Franklin believes that he can spin the truth to achieve his goals to be more respected by society, he feels stronger about the idea that determination will lead to success and the admiration of the public.…

“Well done is better than well said” (Poor Richard’s Almanac). Benjamin Franklin not only thought of quotes to help guide our daily lives, he lived them. Arguably the greatest genius of his time, Franklin was a hard worker, relentless learner, and passionate thinker. From a general perspective Franklin is a man who worked diligently in school, studied untiringly, and excelled in most everything he did. Although he was a dynamic learner, he never had a stable childhood, much less a formal education. Using his passion and thoughts of right and wrong, Franklin shaped himself the legacy he has today. A look into the life of Benjamin Franklin’s patriotism and ingenuity shows us much more than meets the eye about this incredible man.…

The cornerstone of the United States of America is its Founding Fathers. This group of highly educated, wealthy aristocrats instigated the revolution against Britain, built the American system of government from scratch, and introduced American ideals that would resonate with the rest of the world. Some of the most acclaimed Founding Fathers include George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. First, Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography seemed to be a replication on his life. A kind of self-reflection on accomplishments and mistakes made in his youth. He wanted to try and help his son become successful, and he thought what better way to demonstrate success than to write about his own successful life. Benjamin Franklin’s portrayal of himself, was not to revel on his accomplishments, instead, the tone is one of self-awareness and personal satisfaction. He believed his autobiography did not serve so much to enlighten himself but to provide an object lesson for the readers. He confesses that he has made many mistakes during his life that he craved he could correct, but he often shows how he succeeded and reached his present state in society. He believed that working hard, education and pinching pennies will earn its own desired end. Work hard and you will have a better life.…
