What would be more important, the safety of an animal, or our own safety? Each day many animals cross our roads but sometimes the unfortunate happens when an animal accidently crossed the road when we are passing by. What do you do? In “Thoughts on Capital Punishment” by Rod Mckuen and “Traveling Through the Dark” by William Stafford, there are some similarities that help the reader compare the two poems, but there are also a number of differences that set them apart for example Stafford’s poem is much more serious than Mckuen’s poem. Although in both poems, the poets show sentimentality for the animals being killed by drivers, they differ in imagery, persona, and tone.…

Green mussel and oyster, locally known as tahong and talaba respectively, are abundant edible shellfishes in the Philippines that sell great commercially because of their tantalizing taste. This literature review explores potential culture sites for further and more productive harvest of green mussel and oyster in Metro Manila. The purpose of this study is to name bodies of water that are feasible for green mussel and oyster farming based on the evaluation of available biophysical parameters, economic, and market opportunities. In accordance with the Mission-Vision statement of Mapúa Institute of Technology, this research delivers the data collectively that will serve as an initiative and development of other researches. Also in line with the creed of the School of Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences, this paper reflects a strong sense of citizenship towards the country and eventually in the larger global community by later on providing credible results that will promote common good of society. Subsequent to this, this research caters the improvement and importance of culture sites that will improve our state of living specifically in terms of economics. Site suitability rating systems are to be used in assessing the environmental parameters of the sites. The biophysical parameters such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, water current and depth of the site are to be measured.…

TWO ASPECTS OF LITERARY STUDY. Such a study of Literature as that for which the present book is designed includes two purposes, contributing to a common end. In the first place (I), the student must gain some general knowledge of the conditions out of which English literature has come into being, as a whole and during its successive periods, that is of the external facts of one sort or another without which it cannot be understood. This means chiefly (1) tracing in a general way, from period to period, the social life of the nation, and (2) getting some acquaintance with the lives of the more important authors. The principal thing, however (II), is the direct study of the literature itself. This study in turn should aim first at an understanding of the literature as an expression of the authors' views of life and of their personalities and especially as a portrayal and interpretation of the life of their periods and of all life as they have seen it; it should aim further at an appreciation of each literary work as a product of Fine Art, appealing with peculiar power both to our minds and to our emotions, not least to the sense of Beauty and the whole higher nature. In the present book, it should perhaps be added, the word Literature is generally interpreted in the strict sense, as including only writing of permanent significance and beauty.…

“Do you know who is the Indian Shakespeare?” Late in 1994, I was on my way from Rishikesh to Mussoorie. In India studying Sanskrit, I thought I would visit the nearby hill station over a weekend, and when the man across the aisle saw my Sanskrit textbook , he began a conversation which moved very quickly from Sanskrit to English literature. He was himself a student, completing a B.A. in English, and he was curious to have my thoughts on such things as the best living novelist in English. He was much my superior on this subject, and at a lull in the conversation, perhaps perceiving that I was at a loss to name the author of “The Windhover,” he asked if I knew the Indian Shakespeare. Considering the extent to which Shakespeare settled in India from colonial performances in the very early days of the Raj to dominating the Parsi stage early in the nineteenth century to becoming the ensign for mandatory English education after 1835, I thought the Indian Shakespeare might as well be Shakespeare. “Kalidasa,” he said. Since I had demonstrated a profound incompetency in English literature, I think it unlikely that my bus-mate was merely trying to supply a common frame of reference on the way to a new topic of conversation. “Who is the Indian Shakespeare?” is an expression of the lingering identity crisis of the literature of postcolonial India, an insecurity which both defers to authority by privileging Shakespeare as the alluring plenitude of the West and challenges authority through its vain answer: a figure who, it is implied, not only corresponds to Shakespeare in the South Asian context, but, perhaps, bests…
