James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…
There are many ways that writers use to help us visualize their story. The author of The Treasure of Lemon Brown uses a lot of descriptive and figurative language to make the story real . When he uses phrases such as, ”Never compare your weakness to other people’s strengths. This text is about the history of this little boy trying to play basketball but, his dad doesn’t want him to play, he wants him to study a lot a be a good kid in school but, after a discussion his son goes out for a walk and he founds an old house and he goes in and found a something that is gonna create a lot of drama .” In the story “the treasure of lemon brown” by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses descriptive and figurative language to develop the mood and the characters in the story.…
Figurative language allows readers to better understand the message that the author is trying to say. Personification allows writers to easily reveal what they are trying to say when descriptions fail them. By including personification, the author can clearly communicate how he felt at a specific time. As a reader, personification allows us to easier relate to the idea or feeling the author is conveying. Wiesel uses personification on page thirty nine, when he says “Remorse began to gnaw at me.” Remorse cannot eat away at a person, but it allows the reader to understand how guilty Elie felt when he did not stand up for his father. A second example of figurative language used in Night is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing allows the author to keep…
Amy Tan allows us to deepen our understanding of her world by finding every day items and ideas that Americans can relate to such as a mother’s desire to do the best for their children, or using meals to represent a nurturing love, or a vase to represent a rocky foundation, or the pain that comes from hiding your true self. The use of figurative language in this novel removes the barriers from both the Chinese and the American cultures and customs therefore allowing us to examine each other not through the eyes of a specific race but through the eyes of one race, the human race.…
Mary Lascelles, a famous literary scholar once said “I suspect that Jane Austen’s practice of denying the aid of figurative language which, as much as any other habits of expression, repelled Charlotte Brontë, and has alienated other readers, conscious with a dissatisfaction with her style that they have not cared to analyze.” Therefore, when an author doesn’t use figurative language, they can alienate their readers and not describe characters, moods, or other objects nearly as well. This would lead to unhappy readers and not an effective book that would not sell a substantial amount of copies. In the stories “The lemon Tree Billiards House” by Cedric Yamanaka and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Myers, both popular short stories, the…

A metaphor is a comparison made without using the words like or as. In this example from the Cuban Poet José Martí’s “Simple Verses,” the comparison is between the sound of the wind and a song. He is saying that the wind in the trees reminds him of a beautiful song; the most beautiful. Nature is the pioneer musician, creating and inspiring ourselves.…
In this essay the candidate does a good job at getting their points across by suporting them with citations and detailed explanations, exploring the meaning of the words in the quotes and understanding what the persona wants to express. They do not assume they know what the poet is expressing, using words like 'seems' when explaining the poem, leaving space for a doubt and making it clear that this is what the candidate interpretates from the poem.…
Commonly figurative language is found in everyday communication, whether it is oral or written language. For example, in the opinion. The properties are a thing that must be met by a variety of language journalism given the newspaper read by all walks of life are not the same level of knowledge. “A November Landscape”, written by E.J. Pratt and “Winter”, which was written by Dorothy Livesay are both different poems that have a smilar tone. Although the tone of both poems is bleak, the tone of “A November Landscape” brightens at the end, while the tone of “Winter” grows to be less hopeful.…
Even by the names of each poem, we can anticipate that they will have subject matter, regarding a child, but stark contrasts in style and structure. To begin with, I can say that “Infant Joy” has a very simple structure and style, emphasizing on the theme of happiness and freedom, while “Infant Sorrow” has a more complex and dissonant style, using language, which reflects the opposite theme of struggle and discomfort. However, I feel that the main theme of both the poems is individualism.…
These two poems both use striking language. Firstly, they both use onomatopoeia to convey the setting of the poems. In “Half-past Two”, the onomatopoeia is used to convey the ticking sound of the clock, whereas in “Piano”, it is used to convey the musical sounds of the piano.…
