Little Mermaid Vs Movie
In the Disney film called “Little Mermaid” Ariel saves a prince from a shipwreck and ends up falling in love with him later in the movie. She makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula. The deal is that Ariel will be human for three days. During those three days, she has to get a kiss from the prince. If she doesn’t, she will turn back into a mermaid and belong to Ursula. She then gives her voice to Ursula and in return her tail gets replaced with a pair of legs. She goes on the land and meets the prince. At the end of the film, Ariel ends up marrying Eric, the prince she loves. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/11/17/the-little-mermaid-fairy-tale_n_6096200.html http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097757/synopsis In Hans Christian Andersen’s version of the story, a part of Ariel’s deal is that he legs will feel like she is walking on knives. They do and always will hurt. This story doesn’t have a happy ending like the other one. Ariel does not get to marry the prince because he marries someone else. Ariel then goes into the ocean and turns into sea foam. I think the changes were big enough to take away from the moral of the story. The ends are completely different. In Disney’s version, Ariel ends up marrying the love of her life and living happily ever after. In Hans’s version, Ariel basically gets so depressed that she …show more content…

Unfortunately, the sun set on the third day. This meant that Ariel now belonged to Ursula forever. But, King Triton stepped in. “To save his daughter, King Triton gave Ursula his great powers and became her prisoner” (Musker & Clements 13). I believe that King Triton is the heroic one in this fairytale because he was willing to give up his powers as king of the sea just to save his daughter that betrayed him in the first place. If anything, that is true love and not the blinded love Ariel felt for the prince. Of course, the story focuses more on Prince Eric saving Ariel by killing the sea-witch, Ursula. In the end, the Prince Eric and Ariel share true loves kiss and live happily ever after. But, the ending still leaves me questioning how true…

I do agree that Disney does follow a lot of the Gender stereotypes. In Disney, Women have to be really skinny and white to be beautiful, which is not true they focus on outer beauty and not inner beauty. They are teaching little girls beauty is being white and skinny that is resulting in an image and standards set for girls. I totally disagree with that and think Beauty should vary and not be just be white and skinny. In "The little Mermaid" many stereotypes are involved involving Ariel and her prince. They teach the idea of changing who you are to be with someone and not following the idea of "being yourself". They teach the idea that women are submissive. I think symbolically it even goes deeper to say that women give up their voice to be…

that there are many forms of adaptions and different directors or producers will have their own unique perspective on it. Hutcheon explains that,“They use the same tools that storytellers have always used; they actualize or concretize ideas; they make simplifying selections, but also amplify and extrapolate, they make analogies; they critique or show their respect, and so on” (Hutcheon 3). Hutcheon then goes on to use The Little Mermaid as an example. The Little Mermaid was adapted into a musical, however the musical not only told the story but also changed certain…

Once again, it is up to her fairy godmother and the prince to rescue her from a life of cruelty. Marriage is her ultimate goal, as it is seemingly her only chance at escape. The movie revolves around beauty and impressing others. Cinderella could have easily gone to the ball in her everyday clothes, but instead she knew that she needed to wear something fancy to impress the men she might meet. Additionally, the prince falls in love with her before they even speak, contributing even more to the idea that beauty is the most important. Despite the fact that she disobeys her step-mother’s orders to not go to the ball, Cinderella still manages to embody innocence and remain submissive to those around her (Baker-Sperry…

Then one evening, as I was having my usual mother-daughter talk with Rapunzel, the prince had the nerve to climb up the tower. I guess some people think just because they have money and power that they can do whatever they want. Anyway, when the prince climbed in the window, he accidently fell on my gardening rake and poked his eyes out. I ran for help, but by the time I came back with a doctor, the prince was gone.…

Her love, Akinli, adopts the role of the prize that distracts Kahlen from her final goal, freedom and takes care of her like a mother figure…

Incredible Mysteries and Legends of the Sea, a story by Edward Snow, talks of a Sea Captain and his encounter with a mermaid: “Captain John Smith saw a mermaid swimming about with all possible grace.” Then he begins describing her as having large eyes, long ears, and long green hair. He even explained that he was quite taken with the lovely mermaid, but he was disappointed when he saw she had a tail. In C.J.S. Thompson’s book The Mystery and Lore of Monsters C.J.S. Thompson noted “Traditions concerning creatures that are half-human and half-fish in form have existed for thousands of years, and the Babylonian deity Era or Oannes, the Fish-god, is represented on seals and in sculpture, as being in this shape for over 2,000 years B.C. He is usually depicted as having a bearded head with a crown and a body like a man, but from the waist downwards, he has the shape of a fish covered with scales and a tail.” So stories of mermaids have been popping up for centuries. Homer’s Odyssey, which was written around 800 B.C., narrates the story of Ulysses and how he was tormented by breathtaking siren song as they sang and tried to lure him to his ultimate demise. Unlike the sirens in the Odyssey, there are other legends that originated in Scotland and Wales that talk about how mermaids became friends with humans, and in some cases, married them. Throughout literary history there have been countless mentions…
