Little Miss Sunshine presents a Cinderella story about an average little girl who wants to be a beauty queen. The glamour, wholesomeness and charm of pageantry that Olive strives to become helps portray the theme of growing up. The film director and producer help to do so with the use of film codes and conventions. I have chosen the opening scene of the movie to demonstrate this.
As you can see at the very first image shown in the movie where just olives eyes are shown, it is immediately evident these eyes are portraying desire. The scene uses the camera angle close up shot of Olive’s eyes, this is a commonly used technical convention. It is used to give attention towards what Olive is focused on, the reflection in Olive’s glasses shows that what she wants is right in front of her, she wants to be the woman on the television and this is her goal. This helps to represent a huge part of growing up, just about everyone had a passion or aspiration as a young child and Olive’s dream is clearly sighted with the use of a single film convention.
