Little old lady from cricket creek
- Setting: The story takes place in southern California at the Great Riveroak Insurance Company. Mabel Jumpstone says she has moved from Cricket Creek, California, which is supposedly in the north, because of the terrible weather. The story is a little dated as there are no computers and all writing is done on manual typewriters but apart from that we can say it takes place in the present. - Characters: Mabel Jumpstone, Ralph Cummings (the narrator of the story) and Art Bowen. Mabel Jumpstone is a sixty-five-year-old secretary. She is described as resembling an old gray mare the first time we meet her but she is extremely competent and proves to be a whiz at typing. She is hired despite her age and in a short time becomes the most popular employee at the insurance company. Ralph Cummings is the narrator of the story and we get an insight into everything that happens through him. He is one of the associates at the insurance company. Art Bowen is the other associate at the insurance company and takes an active part in the interview and hiring of Mabel Jumpstone. - Plot: Mabel Jumpstone is hired to work in an insurance company, although she is sixty-five years old and a bit odd, because of her typing skills. This proves to be a good choice as she is extremely competent and soon becomes quite popular at work. She always brings a cake for everyone’s birthday and people begin bringing their problems to her. After six months, however, she disappears after having robbed the company of $78,000. There is no trace of her as investigations show that her background was fictitious and she has never written anything by hand. This is certainly a surprise for the reader but we are even more surprised when it turns out the narrator is in on the duplicity. After having played the part of the duped insurance agent, he meets Mabel Jumpstone, who is his mother, and they share the loot. - Theme: The story is a humorous account of how easy it is to be deceived by appearances. To begin with, there is the hint of prejudice against hiring such an old employee whom they are sure will only be able to type ten words a minute. Mabel proves them wrong and after having gained their trust by playing the part of the innocent, little old lady, robs them blatantly. The fact that the narrator is also playing a part becomes clear only at the end of the story. Things are not what they appear to be at all in this story.

Furthermore, Tennessee Williams’ realistic drama ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ presents two groups within society in a confined setting. His play sets out a realist effect on the middle class versus working class environment. Williams does this by personifying the two classes by using the relationship between two sisters. Stella, is the oldest sister who represents a working class, she lives in a shabby flat with her alcoholic, abusive, Polish husband Stanley, and is pregnant with his child. Blanche on the other hand is a middle class, sophisticated and self sufficient woman who is shocked at the way the working class lives, particularly her sisters living conditions. It could be suggested a class system is the cause of fragmentation within society,…

There is a common saying that looks can be deceiving, yet people still get themselves caught up with people who will hurt them in the long run. In both short stories, Rosaura in Liliana Hecker’s “Stolen Party” and Phase in Paul O’Neill’s “Phase in Space” are tricked by what they perceived the situation to be rather than really thinking about what was happening to them. Rosaura is the child of a servant that works for Senora Ines and eventually gets invited to a party, not thinking anything negative of it, while Phase is a man who gets lost in the jungle and a female tribe ends up finding him, and Phase goes with them thinking only optimistic thoughts. Rosaura and Phase both came from two different backgrounds and generations, but they experienced…

The story takes place in the projects of San Pedro, California. San Pedro is known for gang violence and drug trafficking. The main character Sunny Toomer and his friends all live here. Having the story take place in such a low-income neighborhood really sets the tone for the whole book. It makes the reader really connect emotionally to Toomer because of his dream is to succeed in school and eventually live a better life. I feel bad for him because it’s hard enough to have goals and aspirations as a kid. It’s especially hard for Toomer because of where he lives. Basing the book in San Pedro also makes for a lot of entertainment for the reader. Toomer and his friends face problems and dilemmas throughout Edgewater…

“Looks can be deceiving” is a statement that should be considered seriously because there is much truth behind the wise saying. United States as a society has been culturalized into forming certain types of stereotypes due to media, beliefs, peers and much more that walks a fine line between courteously and ignorance. The play Arsenic and Old Lace written by Joseph Kesselring highlights how much society can overlook things due to stereotypes which results in a ridiculous situation with high levels of ignorance. Perception of age, looks, sarcasm, and gender is emphasized in this play and society today, which lead to numerous murders that should have otherwise been put to an end if the situation was evaluated objectively.…
