THE ROLE AND PERFORMANCE OF
LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION IN ETHIOPIA
i
Abstract
The study has analyzed the current performance and problems in the livestock sector of Ethiopia, a country endowed with a huge livestock resources and animal genetic diversity. The main purpose of the study is to show that the livestock sector has a huge capacity to develop and contribute to the
Ethiopian economy if given more attention and exploited appropriately. The conclusion of the study is that, although livestock is substantially contributing to the Ethiopian economy, the huge livestock resource and potential of the country has not yet been efficiently utilized and the country has so far failed to benefit from these resources due to policy, technical, institutional, marketing, and sociocultural constraints. Finally, the possible recommendations suggested to improve livestock production include investment in resource and development of the livestock sector, effective value chain co-ordination and development, reliable input and service provisions, the adjusting and reorienting of the livestock production and marketing systems, and improvement in policies.
