Living In A Highly Mobile Society Analysis
A shocking 14 million people in the U.S. are in a long distance relationship, yet Perry Patetic tries to argue this is not possible. The author in his passage argues that living in a highly mobile society is not worth it. The author supports his claim by first explaining how transportation makes it too easy to move away from people. He continues by making a connection between transportation and a lack of close relationships. The author’s purpose is to convince people that living in a highly mobile society is highly disadvantageous so that people may consider living closer together. The author establishes a critical tone for people who drift away from others using transportation. Transportation allows people to move away from each other, however, that does not necessarily mean that connections between people have to be cut. …show more content…
Perry Patetic says that transportation is why, “...often we lose track of old friends we never see again.”(4). This highly mobile society creates a tremendous distance between people that makes having a close relationship inconceivable. A close relationship over distance is perfectly conceivable and can be even easier than walking across the street, the solution is social media and VoIP. These things allow for advanced communication between any number of people from any distance. VoIP (Voice/Video over Internet Protocol) allows face to face communication with people one may have moved away from. Social Media is a bit more general and indirect form of communication, but combined with VoIP they can be used to maintain a close relationship with someone from around the world. Technology has given us this transportation, and it has also given us the solutions to any problems it may

In a recent study conducted by Matthew Brashears of Cornell University, 2,000 adults were asked the number of friends whom they share a close relationship with. The average response was 2.03 and it decreased from a similar study from 1985, which received an average response of three close friends (Silard. “From Face-to-Face to Facebook”). It is proven that humans thrive on human interaction, so cutting that face-to-face off could damage humans negatively by causing them to suffer more health problems due to physical inactivity and no interaction. “People who, like the Facebook COO, claim that we have never been so connected with each other are missing a vital point: the people making all these "connections" through the Internet and social media are, in the non-virtual plane sometimes referred to as "reality," sitting alone in front of a pixelated screen.” (Silard.). Even though we are able to interact with different of people from around the world, we become isolated from the people around us. People cut off their friends and family and would rather spend time on the…

One reason why technology is ruining people's friendships is because people don’t talk to each other in person anymore. Another reason why is because if people don’t talk to each other in person, they won't really know what's happening. The last reason why is because you won't get to see what’s happening in person. These are the one of…

In many long distance relationships, technology is key for their survival. Without Technology there would be no communication and the relationship will shatter. According to Gcsunade.com, “ Relationships that start off using technology as the basis for getting to know each other tend to last longer and are sometimes for life”. The need for technology is critical to maintain a good long distance relationship. On the other hand, many strong relationships are local. According to Gcsunade.com, “It (technology) is a substitute, but it is an unequal substitute,” Even though technology might aid long distance relationships, technology also crack local relationships. Without strong local relationships, we become more dejected and begin to push away all relationships. Which is why technology does aid to the scattering of…

“Today, with recent advances in Technology, people can maintain their social networks electronically; they don’t need face-to-face contacts (Schaefer, 2012,119).” For myself personally, social networking has been an important part of my life for this past year. My Husband is in the United States Coast Guard, so his job requires us to relocate to different stations mainly across the United States. Relocating is always a big adjustment, because not only are you in a new environment that you know almost nothing about, but you also have to leave your family and friends behind. “Whether through text-messaging, handheld devices, or social networking sites like Facebook, a significant amount of networking occurs online (Schaefer, 2012,119).” Without Social Networking sites like Facebook, it would make the relocating even harder, because having Facebook we are able to keep up with the lives of our family and friends-and vice versa-even though we are hundreds of miles away and rarely get to see them.…

With social technology’s advanced development, I believe social technology is evolving the ways in which people communicate. Many years ago, the ways people communicate were limited to face-to-face, letter or telephone. However, emails, text’s and internet (Facebook, chat rooms, etc), which are dominant in the technological medians have changed human lifestyles tremendously. People rather text than talk; use social technology to communicate with the loved ones whenever it is. In Sherry Turkle’s essay: “” she worries about human connection with social technology might have negative impacts to human intimacy. Naomi Klein, author of “” talks about both beneficial and destructive “fences” that are existed to keep people isolated from things that…

Neal Gabler’s article “The Social Networks” says “Facebook, in fact, only underscores how much traditional friendship-friendship in which you meet, talk and share – has become an anachronism and how much being “friended” is an ironic term” (par7). Sadly, it is true that people sometimes prefer to have more contact with friends through a social network, calls or texting than to be seen in person. The way people used to have coffee with friends on weekends, meet to chat about an important event that happened or just hang out with an old friend seem to have been lost along with the importance of real friendship. Now, people have more friends on Facebook that they used to have when social networks were not widespread, and probably they do not know 80% of their Facebook friends.…

Where would people be without technology? They would not keep in contact with the one they met at Casablanca three years ago, or trawling through a photo album of their elementary school classmates. They would not be able to use emoji instead of words to craft a sentence. However, technological advances make people be too immersed in the virtual world and disconnect from people around them. It means that technology has gradually taken the place of the side by side connection and face-to-face conversation. There is a sense of panic about how technology interferes with human interaction. Sherry Turkle, a psychologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in her article “Flight From Conversation,” uses much credible evidence to explain how the increase of connections among people from miles away has led to a loss in face-to-face and eye-to-eye…

Another example from my personal experience would be the point in my life when my mom and I lived in El Centro. It is a two hour drive from San Diego yet every weekend we found the time to go up and attend family events to connect with them. In this case I was far away from all my family yet it was easy to go see them whenever we wanted, through the use the modern day car. Although the use of tech can keep people connected it can also help filter out the ones that you do not want to be near. In case a person is too far away to travel to on a daily basis, another way to connect would be through social media. When a person is using social media they have a choice on who they want to and don't want to talk to. This is another point of view the author forgot to look from, some relationships are violent and abusive. With today's modern tech a person can not only escape from the situation they can also keep their relationships with the ones they have to leave. Transportation and technology is not only able to keep individuals together it can also keep them safe.…

Not too many people keep the friendships they made growing up or often end up moving away from family, thus causing loss to a supportive relationship. Perry Patetic in his excerpt discusses that having such an open and mobile society can cripple relationships. The author supports this claim by first generally referencing negative effects of being able to fly, drive, or potentially move long distance. Patetic continues by declaring that there are more downfalls to mobility than benefits. The author’s purpose is to encourage the reader to reevaluate the way mobility has impacted close relationships within their life. He portrays a bias tone for those lacking an old-fashioned relationship. Utilizing mobility does not hinder relationships but helps maintain them from a distance.…

Perry Pathetic’s quote on high mobility is one that tells the reader to look past the pros and instead realize the various cons that come with the age of high mobility. Pathetic goes on to state the sheer easiness of mobility that vehicles such as trains and cars have provided us with and how it's a driving force for the separation of family and friends. Pathetic mentions that as we travel longer distances we start to separate ourselves more and in doing so we develop a lack of interest or lose track of those around us. Pathetic may sound like your typical old school grandpa with stories of “back in my day…” but the reality is he is touching a very untalked about subject when it comes to dealing with society and social bonds. Sure technology is a benefit but that doesn't mean it cannot have any burdens as well.…

In “Will They Call Us ‘Generation Isolations’?,” Diane Schmitt explains that modern technology’s impact on people’s social interaction or lack there of seems to be a mixed bag. According to Schmitt, mobile phones and social networking websites have been some researches suggesting that there is indeed a correlation between use of Internet, video games, and MP3 palyers and reduced face-to-face interaction. For instance, in one study, about 10 percent of who spent more 5hours online had fewer social interactions. The author describes more people live isolated nowadays than the previous generation. On the other hand, the author point out that the latest technology can encourage people to have more social relations. A research tells that people…

Today’s world is so highly mobilized that a family can be spread across the world but still keep in contact with each other. Perry Patetic in his excerpt, about a highly mobilized society, claims that the lack of strong relationships is created by today’s society being so highly mobilized. The author supports his claim by first comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the mobilization of the world. He continues by giving observations of families traveling long distances to see each other. The author’s purpose is to point out the problems of not having a strong relationship with the people around you in order to hopefully have people stay closer to home once they are older. The author establishes a judgemental tone for young adults who…
