The first question asked Jessica Long was “ What is your opinion on Jeter’s quote”? She replied “ I agree with his quote because I believe if you look at Major League Baseball or other professional sports you will see that the people that are dedicated and work the hardest weren’t always the most talented when they were younger, they had to work at it to get better” ( Jessica Long). Jessica has a very valid point here. Most kids aren’t the most talented when they first start, they have to work to become a better athlete. Even in professional sports the players have to train and practice everyday to become better. I think a lot of kids right now are trying to specialize to soon which not only does it not help develop their skill set but also restricts them on what they are able to experience later on. In this model there are three zones, at first the comfort zone, after that the learning zone and at least the panic zone. When you are getting out of your comfort zone you arrive in the learning zone, just across the border. In this area it is possible to grow, to learn, to be curious and explore your possibilities. Being in this area feels exciting but the safety comfort zone is only one step behind you. A trainer or coach will bring you in this area. By for example; practicing parasailing when you have not done this before. At first it feels uncomfortable and unpleasant in this new zone, this is called ‘the groan zone’. When a person is more often in this area it will be more and more comfortable, you learn to feel comfortable in strange situations. In his book “Wooden on Leadership,” the coach reveals that he never focused on his teams’ records or gauged success or failure on wins versus losses. Rather, he defined success as “peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” Wooden told his players that there would always be someone who is faster, stronger or jumps higher, so they should focus their collective energy and attention toward something they could control: maximizing their potential. This characteristic resembles active, but includes the athletic and a physical activity associated with engaging in an action. Although being athletic seems as simple as tossing a ball around the backyard, it’s difficult to measure the amount fitness and effort required for a completive competition such as a marathon. (Loehr & Schwartz, 2001) Executives need to maintain overall health and “train” for success, similar to athletes. The authors used data from various sources and studies to discuss the psychological side of overtraining and corrective techniques that can be implemented with the aim of managing workload. Their research focuses on the psychological causes and effects that overtraining has on young athletes such as stress and depression. This source will be useful to my research as the authors propose various contributing psychological factors that lead to overtraining and burnout. The main limitation is that it does not provide any direct links to the psychological effects of overtraining away from the sport itself such as school or social interactions. Therefore, more research must be conducted to show the relationship between overtraining and the effect of activities away from a sport in children.
