Living Like Weasels Summary

In the short story “Living like Weasels” Dillard goes into description after locking eyes with a weasel living life in their shoes. After one week of seeing a weasel for the very first time Dillard began to read about them learning their way of life. She begins discussing step by step the of survival a weasel has to face and how wild they can be up until their death amongst an eagle. Around the evening when the sunset she enjoys walking through the woods twenty minutes from her house where she sits on the tree trunk and observes nature. There she experiences a ten-inch-long weasel that was alert and motionless under a wild rose bush spectating her like any animal would. Once he vanished she began to dwell on that moment she had with the weasel
hoping to learn how to live or remember. Her idea of live like a weasel because they don’t just attack like humans tend to they live their lives as they’re meant to. They stop yielding every moment in which they have the perfect freedom of single obligation. Wendell Berry poem “The Peace of Wild Things” talks about freeing himself from the hectic world and later being free to a world of peace. The first three lines informs the readers how he wakes up and worry about his life and the life of his children in a world that continues to lose his hope. Relaxing in the woods near the water where the bird nourishes off of the fish is his happy place. The author finds peace in the experience of wild things such as the animal going about his day for survival. The idea of grief throughout our lives seem to disappear in that moments of peace. The still water and stars that aren’t fully clear due to the bright blue sky still gives him a feeling of freedom. Berry speaks about “I rest in the grace of the world” as he looks up in the sky laying back peacefully.
