Lizzy And The Big Oak Tree Chapter Summary
Lizzy is telling the story about how Joshua and Neely got married when Nem and Joshua decided to run away. The masters caught Nem and was going to do something to him. The slaves were huddling around the campfire praying that Nem won't die.
Lizzy and her friends are huddled around the campfire, taking about what will happen to Lem and Joshua. Moses, another slave, was talking to Lizzy about maybe not seeing Lem and
Joshua again. After, most of the people decided to go to sleep, but Lizzy wants to rescue Lem from the big oak tree.
Lizzy walks toward the big oak tree when grandma dolly stops her and says not do save him, it is to dangerous, but Lizzy doesn't listen to him and finds Lem and gives him water. Joe Haynes finds her and whips her,
but Joshua attacks him.
Lizzy doesn't grab the gun because she is too scared to shoot so after Joshua finds out that Joe
Haynes doesn't have any more weapons, he jumps up, grabs the gun, and wants to shoot, but
Lem and Lizzy don't want him to. So, Joshua puts down the gun and ties Joe Haynes to the big oak tree. Before she runs away with Nem and Joshua, she wants to say goodbye to her other slave friends.
Lizzy runs away with Joshua and Nem after she says goodbye to all of her slave friends. She wants to go back, but she wants to have a free life with Nem and Joshua. Joshua wants to look for Neela, so Lizzy and Nem goes to sleep. The next day, the expect to see Joshua, but he doesn't come back.
Lizzy wakes up from her nap that day, hoping to see Nem and Joshua, but she doesn't see any of the so she walks around, hoping to find them. She finds Nem, so she walks north with him in the night. They hear hounds so they run as long as they can. When the hounds almost catch them, they find a yankee base, so they hide in it. After the hounds go away Nem joins the army and sees Joshua there! Lizzy also joins the army at the end.
