The cover of the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald incorporates many of the recurring themes and motifs that are expressed throughout the novel. Francisco Couradal-Cougat worked with Fitzgerald to create the most recognizable book cover in American literature. My cover of the novel is called The Distracted Dream. I gave The Great Gatsby the title of The Distracted Dream because the novel is primarily about Gatsby’s dream of being with his true love Daisy. Gatsby believes that if he has enough success, then he will be worthy of Daisy and they will be able to run off together. Throughout the novel money and material things distract Gatsby from his dream and he loses the true meaning of it. Gatsby is so focused on his dream that it he is distracted from other intervening factors in life such as Daisy’s husband and child that she already has. He refuses to admit that they are important influences on the success of his dream. The title also relates to the theme of the corruption of the American Dream that is prevalent in the novel. Many people during the 1920s came to America in order to fulfill “The American Dream”, which was associated with wealth and success. The parties and materialism present in the 1920s distracted many people and they forgot about their original desires and the true meaning of the American Dream.

The main focus of the cover is a pair of two green eyes that are on fire. Eyes are a very important motif in the novel in which they represent the eyes of T.J Eckelburg. These eyes in the novel symbolize the replacement of spiritual and religious beliefs with materialism, instead of God’s eyes judging a person from above, a billboard with the eyes of T.J Eckleburg on it acts as the main source of judgment for the people of this corrupt society.
