The 6 European Great Powers, the United Kingdom, the Austrian Empire, Prussia, France, Russia and Italy, plus the United States and Japan but they are not European. The atmosphere was high all the countries thought they were superior to the others. The assasiantion of Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 started it all off. The war officially started on July 28th 1914 and other countries joined to gain power of other countries for example Germany. The Triple Alliance was the military alliance between Germany, Austria–Hungary and Italy and The Triple Entente was made up of Britain, France and Russia.
Imperialism was a massive effect Britain owned over ¼ of the worlds land and Germany also wanted a large overseas empire so Germany feel threatened by England’s empire .Nationalism also took a big part countries like Britain, Germany and France more bellicose. It made the races ruled by Turkey and Austria-Hungary want to be free to rule themselves (eg Balkan Wars 1912-13).Militarism had a massive part as well Not just an arms race - also an attitude of mind, which sees war as a valid means of foreign policy. Germany's Navy Law 1900 threatened British sea-power. Germany felt threatened by Russia's growing arm. Hotzendorf & Austria-Hungary's ultimatum to Serbia 1914.
Long term - When the German Emperor Wilhelm II,known as the Kaiser in Britain, made the statement “Our future lies upon the ocean” Everyone knew what he meant to do next and began to increase the size of their armed forces.This lead to an arms race in which each country tried to build a much bigger and better military machine than their enemy. Between 1870 and 1914, military spending by the main European powers increased by 300 percent and still today people are fighting for land
