In this article “Localizing Globalization” by Chris Mooney, he states that study by the University of California of Davis warned that chemical MTBE may cause cancer in humans but the person who produces the MBTE his name is Methanex, he sued that federal government of United State for 97 million. According to him, California’s is removing his property so that is why he sued them. In addition to that because of NAFTA he has the right to sue them but many people in federal government in California was worried because if he wins the case then many other people will also sue them and that is what happen after he wins his case another US company sued. that our democratic making…. is being second guessed in a distant forum by unelected officials.” Zoellick, in a somewhat evasive response, assured the lawmakers that states had nothing to worry about because NAFTA rules “do not have direct effects in U.S law.”(Mooney) I think they were more worried because they thought if he win the case who has to pay the damage and it might affect the innocent taxpayers in the other 49 states just because of the one states and this had a lot of pressure on the federal government of California.
