Locked Up Almost three years ago I went to court and was locked up for 11 months. It all started in high school. I was in the 9th grade for the second time. I didn’t really hang out with anybody but Kayla and Trey. On October 31st Kayla and I went to 4th hour as usual and were planning on what to do that night for Halloween. Next thing I know Trey walks up and sits across from me. We start talking as any other day, Trey mentions if I still need a phone. Trey sets an I-phone on the table in front of me and asks if I want to buy it, I pull some money out of my pocket and set it down and take the phone. After class I take Kayla out for lunch at a Mexican restaurant in Rogersville having a fun time. We finally get back to school and an officer approaches me asking if I had an I-phone because we have one that’s missing and have a report that you took it. Of course my buddy Trey had to sell me a stolen phone and ended up going to jail till my court date. I dint have enough evidence to prove my innocent. The judge sentenced me to 11 months in county jail. I was locked up and lost all my freedom. In 1982 Eric Foner, a historian and writer, penned an article called “Reconstruction Revisited”. In this article he expressed his views on the Reconstruction period of American history, and how this period of time had become the subject of much debate. To begin this discussion Foner writes, "historians have failed to produce a coherent modern portrait of Reconstruction.”1 To back this statement, Foner uses specific examples stemming from the different schools of thought to come of studying Reconstruction and how much they have varied, both from each other and sometimes the truth.…

Religion has affected society both positively and negatively throughout life. Most religions promote and educate individuals in social virtues; how to choose right over wrong regardless of personal desire (Fisher, 2005). Many charities feed, cloth, and shelter the homeless all in the name of their God and acting on their faith. Unfortunately, while organized religion promotes faith in positive social virtues it also can instill fear and oppress its follower at times. The followers who see the founder of a religion to be extraordinary or supernatural could be mislead by a dishonest and unethical leader (Fisher, 2005).…

Writing an essay can be daunting, but understanding the correct steps in the process can relieve stress and set the student on the proper path. Student's have been taught numerous ways on how to develop a paper and picking the correct one can be challenging. Some people may write well in high school, but when they get to college they find out their methods are conflicting to the professor's. Joan Arbery’s article “Some Thoughts Concerning Academic Essays" has caused me to consider the experiences that I have had writing academic essays. Writing is a process in which people put their thoughts onto paper to express ideas, concerns and sometimes apprehensions. People from different backgrounds and cultures express themselves in numerous ways giving the readers insight into their world. Being an Indian who has studied in a school founded by the British, I have been introduced to a foreign style of writing which is remarkably different than college level papers in the United States. My first encounter with college level essay writing was when I filled out the Common Application essays. The topics were primarily about introspection and using my voice to tell my story.…

During this course we have learned a lot about America has grown and changed over the past few hundred years. We started back in the 1780’s were punishments focused on public humiliation, workhouses, and corporal punishments, then in colonial times (1790s) we began to institute more humane practices that included incarceration. In 1825 we entered the mass prison era, prisons then focused on efficiency, communal meals, no eye contact, and other minor changes. In the reform era (1876) we started the early release program and solitary confinement. Again in 1890’s we had another evolutionary step in the industrial era of prison history, the government began using prisoners to create an income for the government. During the punitive era (1938) we stepped back a bit in the name of progress and focused more on the long term sentences, but this lead to more riots and fights. In 1945 a new philosophy was introduced, the treatment era focused on curing the disease of social sickness. People were given medical treatments in order to cure them, such as castration. In 1967 the community era began focusing on bringing the criminals in with the community in order to rehabilitate them. In 1980 the warehouse era immerged where hope for rehabilitation was again lost and again prisons focused on time served. Now in today’s times 1995-to present we are focusing on the just desert, time to fit the crime.…
