To accurately depict the Viking Age, the longhouse's mead hall and accommodation were recreated down to every detail including the decorations and handcrafts used during that time. In this manner, the museum aims to bring you back in time to witness how the Vikings live from day to day. Aside from the mead hall, you will find a number of modern exhibits, archaeological items and videos that all share Viking stories from thousands of years of history. You can get an Audioguide to make your exploration of the Lofotr Viking Museum more comprehensive and meaningful. The Audioguides are available in 6 languages, including English. …show more content…
Aside from the exhibits in Lofotr, the museum also has a special treat for all its guests.
One of the main things to experience while here is to partake in the Viking feast. This special dinner consists of sampling Viking-inspired dishes combined with lively storytelling by knowledgeable guides in full costume! Some of the tasty dishes to look forward to include braised lamb, fish, and wild boar. As a compliment to the food, glasses full of mead, the traditional Viking drink made of alcohol honey and herbs, are
provided.
This fantastic dining and storytelling experience is then capped off with the dancing of the traditional ring dance to the tune of an old Viking song. And of course, guests are always welcome to dance and party with the Vikings! The museum interior is not the only highlight of your visit to Lofotr. If you walk outside to the nearby inlet, you will find a magnificent replica of a Viking ship named Gokstad.
The Lofotr Viking Museum is open all year round at varying times, but if you have the luxury to visit it at will, consider coming during summer, which typically is between the 15th of June to the 15th of August. During this time, more activities are being offered to guests. You can try your hand at archery or rowing a Viking ship. If you want to be more daring, why not learn how to throw an axe Viking style?
August is a special month at Lofotr as the museum celebrates the annual Viking festival, which extends to 5 fun-filled days. During this time, booths, games and markets will be set up. The museum will also organize concerts, workshops, fight exhibits and various activities! If you don't feel like having a big feast, you can always grab a light snack and a drink at the seaside Skjeltersjåen café. You may arrange your own transport to Lofotr Viking Museum. You can also opt to take the public bus line that runs between Leknes and Slovlvaer. The museum also maintains its own bus service, which departs from Stamsund Hurtigruten pier.
