Long-term care services are expensive and were difficult to obtain in the past. According to Singh (2016), once Medicare and Medicaid were designed LTC services became a part of the US healthcare system which made service more available
for those who require the use of the service (p. 29). The implementation of this two-government health insurance made it easier for individuals with a disability, mental illness, and the aging population to have access to term care services that were not readily assessable previously due to the lack of financial resources. There has been significant development over the past 50 years in regards to the increase number of people who are able to utilize the service.
As the population continue to face health issues that may require surgery or extensive care I predict the need for long-term service will continue to increase over the next ten years and beyond. While some people are adopting a healthier lifestyle, the decline in health and the increasing number of people who have a mental issue or disability increases of people may require the use of LTC service in the future. As healthcare continues to develop so will the resources at LTC facilities which will allow them to assist more people with their ongoing medical needs.
