A concussion is when the brain bounces against the skull after someone’s head is hit or jolted. Massive swelling spreads through the brain and continues with symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, irritability to light and sound, and even blurred vision. People who have had a concussion in the past may find that it takes longer to recover from their current injury. A blow to the head more than one time has a higher risk for brain damage. No pharmacological treatment exists, but people may use pain medications that are prescribed for headaches.

Most people think that concussions occur only during huge helmet-to-helmet collisions resulting in a player being knocked unconscious.
