Ishmal is the author and protagonist. Ishmal is form Sierra Leone and he was their when the civil war broke out. Ishmal was also a regular teenager he did raps and dances with his friends. He had to do go un his own because he got separated from his parents and eventually gets separated from his brother. Ishmal had to deal with the evils of war. Were ever he would go he would get judged. This war changed his life because he is no longer free he has to coastally run because the rebels destroy villages and take the people hostage. He usually escapes but he finally gets captured. I believe the conflict for Ishmal would be being separated from his family, going to a safe place, being judged were ever he would go.

from his family. He faces this conflict because he would probably be scared to go on with out his parents. He also always talks about stuff that his father use to say and stuff he did with his family. Going through such thought things without family is impossible to imagine and he had to so just that. It must have been one of the most difficult things he had to do in his life. It was once explained as, “I feel as if there is nothing left for me to be alive for. I have no family, it is just me. No one will be able to tell me stories about my childhood.” (page167 ).
Secondly I think the another conflict could be finding a safe place. He usually finds a safe place but it doesn’t remain a safe place for a long time. Villages are always constantly destroyed. Having a home is something many people take for granted. It’s a safe place that once comes back to and always finds comfort in. Ishmal didn’t have that. He was chased out od his and unable to settle anywhere else. A home really is an important thing to have and it really was something he suffered loosing. As he explains, “I hope that you boy can find safety before this untrustworthiness and fear causes someone to harm you “ (Page 56 ).
Third I think another conflict could be being judged every village he goes to his is being judged.
They think that all kids walking around villages are evil. It became hard for him to form relationships or to act as a normal teenage boy because he was unable to get past the judgments people had gave him. Being judged is harmful for a boy who has already lost so much. First the separation, then the constant running, and now being shunned. It stopped him from having a childhood that every kid should have. For example as stated in the book, “you children have become little devils, but you came to the wrong “ (page66
