Longfellow is American poet and educator who is born in the Romanticism Era. Longfellow in the “A Psalm of life” is more like a inspirational and motivational speaker in the poem. Longfellow’s and TI similarities are that you should enjoy life. They think that you should ignore and not worry bad and negativity around you and be happy you are alive and have a life. The Devil in the White City written by Eric Larson is divided into two different stories. One of the Stories tells us about Daniel Burnham and his serious of struggles while trying to conduct and build the greatest fair in the history of the world. The other concurrent story is about another man named H.H Holmes. Holmes is the opposite from Burnham. The author uses diction in order to show us the difference between the two. Not only by the character’s literal actions but the way he expresses them on paper. For example, when the chapter is focused on Burnham the writing style is formal opposed to colloquial. The author does this to show readers that Burnham is a more stable character. Formal writing is very set in stone, which means there aren’t very many sentences that can stick out and surprise you. Much like Burnham actions they don’t surprise you because you know exactly what he is working for. On the other when you are reading about Holmes, you have no idea what he is working for. This is why Larson chose to have a more colloquial diction in those chapters. The form of diction relates to the characters. Formal represents predictable which describes Burnham and colloquial translates into mystery, which translates into Holmes. This makes readers excited to turn pages and find them selves on chapter about Holmes. Another way Eric Larson manipulates language in order to connect to readers is figurative language. Larson makes it so that the hotel that Holmes is in charge of is indeed a metaphor for himself. The hotel is beautiful on the outside. On the inside it is corrupt with murder. This is metaphor for Holmes. Holmes is a well-put together, handsome young man on the surface. In reality we find out that he is mentally unstable and psychopathic. Having the author weave the metaphor within his writing allowed the book to be an eye opener for the real world and made the book much more enjoyable. I believe the…

I read the book and I also read the two other things you recommended. I was touched mainly by Elsie’s business and the article by Andrea Smith. I am a Cherokee and have always lived in the white world. I only have 1/16 Cherokee blood. I have seen documentaries about life on the reservation , but have never experienced it. I also have watched a series called Longmire set in town in Wyoming near an Indian reservation. They also talk about sex crimes against Indian women. I was so saddened reading Elsie’s story and the article by Andrea Smith. I understand how stupid people were in the way past , not saying it was right but they were ignorant. What I do not understand is how even in modern times the 1950’s, 1960’s and so on the way…

Chloe Hooper’s book ‘The Tall Man’ published in 2008 tells the story of the 2004 Palm Island death in custody. She follows the lives of the families involved and the events that took place after the death. I will focus on a passage from the text on pages 182-185. This passage is about the inquest into Cameron Doomadgee’s death. A large proportion of the passage is spoken in the first person but also reverts to the third person at the end of the passage. Speaking in the first person is Tracy Twaddle, the now widowed wife of Cameron Doomadgee. In this part of the text Hooper has used a transcript from the inquest to show how Cameron Doomadgee’s wife’s presentation to the court resonates there is love and peace within the Palm Island community and is the depiction of who Cameron Doomadgee was but at the same time portrays the existence of goodness among the people on the island. Here the reader is presented with the first insight into Cameron Doomadgee’s life and at the same time offers an introduction and understanding into the contradictions that exist within life on Palm Island…

Have you ever thought, why is my teacher so adamant about me reading To Kill a Mockingbird? What if I told you it is filled to the brim with life lessons and morals that allow us to reflect deeply upon it? Firstly, life lessons are more important than you think and they matter for a few specific reasons. Secondly, if you look at the main protagonist, Atticus he was always kind and demonstrated numerous life lessons. Lastly, one of the main topics is racism and it has a lot of teaching value. With all of these prominent ideas that schools love to promote, how could they not choose this book?…

The two poems are similar in their corresponding feeling of dread for death. Using diction, Keats reflects on how he “may cease to be” and how he “may never live.” Similarly, Longfellow states that “[h]alf of [his] life is gone” and that the “years slip from” him. Both narrators then continue to lament their fears of not accomplishing everything they had once aspired to do. Keats uses an anaphora of “when” in order to illustrate the various and wide-ranging fears that are related to death. He also uses the anaphora of “before” in order to further accentuate his concerns of dying before he is able to accomplish various educational yearnings. Similarly, Longfellow also acknowledges his failure in fulfilling “the aspiration of [his] youth” or in building a “tower of song with lofty parapet.” This tower symbolizes a success of literary prowess and legacy the speaker had once hoped to wish for. He realizes that he will not accomplish everything he had once wanted. Both of these poems are ultimately similar in that they both illustrate men who fear that their lives will be coming to an end.…

Both Keats and Longfellow were poets during the Romantic period. The two compose poems in which they reflect on their inability to live up to their creative potential and the idea that death could intervene at any moment. Longfellow is disappointed in his failures and sees comfort in the past rather than an uncertain future. Moreover, Keats fears he won’t accomplish all that he wants, but sees possibility and realizes his grievous goals won’t be important after death. While Longfellow’s tone is fearful, Keats’ is appreciative and hopeful about what life has to offer right now. In both poems, the poets use the literary devices parallelism and symbolism, to depict their particular situation in their own lives, while also using diction with characteristics of romantic poetry, reflecting their time period.…

These ideals might seem as if completely different, but the points that they try to get across, are exactly the same.
