Look At Me Now Being a young African-American woman stereotyping has always been a part of my life and I have to come to a conclusion that it will always be a part of it. Stereotype is defined as to characterize or regard as a stereotype; to give a form to. It has not been as bad as in the 1900’s; but it has affected my life and the way that I look at certain situations. Because of where I grew up, my uncommon as well as my appearance; I encounter stereotype instances. I am from Acres Homes, Garden City Park, which is considered the hood here in Houston, Texas. Garden City Park is a neighborhood that was and is still considered the better neighborhood to have grown up; but was actually in the heart of Acres Homes. This area is considered the ghetto, the poor area where most people use public transportation to get around as well as walk wherever you have to go. There is a corner store in front of the neighborhood and one on every corner going down one main street; therefore there is a stereotype because of where I come from.
The textbook defines stereotype as “Drawing broad and very general conclusions based on insufficient evidence can therefore lead to harmful results, not only for the victim.” (Mosser, 2011) Ghetto is a stereotype in itself; many people that are not familiar with the ghetto seem to think that they have the great idea of what the ghetto really is. The word ghetto is defined as a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, predominately by members of ethnic minority group. This definition is a stereotype within itself. Because I am from Acres Homes, people automatically assume that I am black, no education and ghetto. There have been times when I have come into contact with people and ask where I’m from and will give a look as if oh she’s ghetto or she does not have anything because of where she comes from.
