Lord Byron's She Walks In Beauty
Harold Bloom, a Yale University professor, once said that “George Gordon, Lord Byron, is literature’s most notorious instance of a writer’s life becoming his work, indeed taking the place of it.” (Pesta, Bloom and Willis 1). Lord Byron was a famous poet that illustrated his emotions through his literature very effectively. Ironically, Byron enjoyed reading and writing, but hated poetry at an early age (Pesta, Bloom and Willis 9). However, Byron’s first piece of literature to be published, called “Fugitive Pieces,” was introduced in November, 1806 (Pesta, Bloom and Willis 21). Many factors contributed to the various writing styles and themes of Lord Byron’s literature; his troubled childhood as well as the way that he obsessed over sexual relationships …show more content…
The poem “She Walks in Beauty” perfectly represents how his feelings and experiences in real life reflected his writings. The poem title immediately captures the attention of the reader and makes them think of a gorgeous lady; almost goddess-like. We can also infer that Lord Byron greatly admires the lady he is speaking of by the way that he phrases the words like a direct statement from him to the reader. Assuredly, he goes into careful detail about how she is beautiful and her eyes are starry as well as dreamy. Furthermore, he explains how insects and even the sunlight is lucky to be able to be on her skin and in her presence (Marshell). Byron best illustrated just how perfect she was by using many different types of figurative language. For instance, he used alliteration, like in lines eleven through twelve where he says “Where thoughts serenely sweet his express, how pure, how dear their dwelling-place.”, to enhance his compassion and make the poem flow smoothly (Marshell). Unquestionably, he uses this figure of speech to compare the easiness of speaking the lines to the way that his love is easy and patient for her. Additionally, Byron uses a rhyme scheme to create a rhythm for the reader which compares to the smoothness of love. Love is not rigid and stern; it is smooth and has a definite rhythm that always stays on beat, even when things get tough (Marshell). Byron’s attitude that he …show more content…
A very distinguished example of this sadness displayed in his poetry would be the piece “Darkness”. Namely, the title itself means that there is no light. One might predict that Byron is stating that there is no good left in the world (Porter). The world is cast into darkness when the sun disappears one day and everyone is forced to be selfish and worry solely about their individual survival. Then, Byron elaborates in great detail how much the people that are left on a dark-filled Earth are filled with enormous fear (GradeSaver). People quickly become desperate for the sight of other humans and to feel the sad connections between one another. Additionally, he explains how certain people go into panic attacks and frenzy, while others fake happiness and wear emotionless smiles (Porter). Before long, humans and animals alike start to become scavengers and seek out any source of food possible. This further shows the common idea of war, even in the disastrous times that could occur. In conclusion, the darkness takes over everything by “forcing” the last two men to kill each other and then taking over the entire universe (GradeSaver). The meaning of this poem directly relates towards the attitude of the poem and to Byron’s outlook on life as well. He shared an attitude of depression, solitude and defeatedness that protruded all the way into his personal life (Porter). Looking

"A Beautiful Girl Combs Her Hair" certainly is filled with beautiful imagery. I could very easily picture the girl "standing on the ivory bed, loosening her hair, watching the mirror..." The poem also contains metaphors. The speaker refers to the girl as a "lotus blossum" and "a wild goose on the sand." I especially liked line 17, "drop the jade comb-no sound." Maybe this is where the translation differs, because it doesn't read "she dropped the jade comb" or even "drops the jade comb" with the subject understood. The image that I see, however, is a beautiful, heavy jade comb falling on a bed so fluffy, pillowy, and soft that the comb doesn't make a sound. The luxurious bed, the silk curtains, the cherry blossoms just down the steps, and the girl's long, thick, perfumed hair make me visualize a paradise as rich as the imagery itself. It seems the speaker is the one who is "Awake at dawn" as the first line says. "The lotus blossom wakes" in line 8. Perhaps he woke early to go watch this girl whom he admires wake up. Or maybe he is so in love with her that he could not sleep for thinking of her. He was already "Awake at dawn" and couldn't stand being without her any longer so he had to go see…

Two specific techniques are used to convey the idea of how the woman in the poem feels about her husband and how she expresses her feelings. These two techniques are rhyming and repetition. The use of rhyming gives the poem a flow to go by. Every last word of a line rhymes with the following last word to create a greater effect of what is being tried to say. The rhymed words give the poem an accent helping to capture the romanticism of the poem. Repetition is seen in the first three lines of the poem when the speaker says, "If ever." The use of these words over and over again show how the speaker feels that it is near impossible to find another love such as the one she has at the moment. These two techniques give the poem an atmosphere of true love and compassion.…

“In the life of everyone there is a limited number of experiences which are not written upon the memory, but stamped there with a die; and in the long years after, they can be called up in detail, and every emotion that was stirred by them can be lived through anew; these are the tragedies of life’’( James Johnson). Poetry is very strange you can read it and think you know what it means and when person next to you thinks it something completely opposite so you talk about it and realize nobody is wrong it just how we interpreted it. The connotation behind the specific word usage the author chose helps the reader make the assumptions of a form of love that is demonstrated by the speaker. Through his use of words such as “beauty”, “perfumed sea” and even comparing this spiritual essence of woman to that of “Psyche”- the god of soul. These quotes help create an emotional sense, evoking a tone of deep affection. Poe is able to keep this tone consistently throughout the poem.…

The author uses many literary elements in the short story. Some are personification, imagery, and similes. Personification is stated in the line that follows: "she was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression," This element shows how strongly she is in repression. It makes the reader actually feel how depressing her life with her husband was. She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life. "The delicious breath of rain was in the air. In the street below a peddler was crying his wares. The notes of a distant song which some one was singing reached her faintly, and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves." Imagery is portrayed in these sentences. By using imagery, the author can help the reader see and feel the environment the character is in. This helps the reader understand the poem on a next level. "She carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory". The author uses simile to describe how calm and happy she is now. She really feels free of all negative vibes now.…

"She Walks in Beauty," The Analysis She Walks in Beauty is a poem in which the author speaks of the physical beauty of a woman; a female who the author encountered. This encounter lead him to visualize a great distinct physical image of her so he began to speak of this phenomenal attractiveness. A special quality in her was being able to be identified with the heaven. Beautiful like the stars and clearly visible as a cloudless night. The poem "She Walks in Beauty" came by as an inspiration to the author. This occurred at an event attended by the author where he meet his cousin which is the woman the author speaks about in the poem. The author lord Byron wrote this poem which is found in the Hebrew Melodies. This publication is found with many other lyrics completed in 1815. The poem speaks through the usage of imagery. The poem is highly rhythmic with meaningful tones. Essentially the female in this poem is evaluated in terms of the physical world. For example, the author does not provide a detailed appearance of the woman. She is instead shown responding to the world around her. George Gordon was born in London in 1788. Gordon was the son of Captain John "Mad Jack" Byron and his second wife, Catherine Gordon, a Scots heiress. The next ten years were difficult for George. One of the reasons was because of his clubfoot. The second reason was because of his mother displaced resentment against his father onto him, and George Gordon had later been tended by a Calvinist nurse whom awakened his sexuality. In 1798 his great-uncle the fifth Baron Byron, died childless, and just after his tenth birthday Byron inherited his title. In 1801 Byron was sent to school at Harrow; in the same year he met his half- sister Augusta. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1805. "Byron first published volume, "Hours of Idleness," appeared in 1807, when he was nineteen; the lofty pose he struck in announcing himself as Lord Byron" (The Penguin Group, 1). Then he took his seat in the…

The symbolism seen in these two poems heavily connects with his perspective of life as it is what he leans on to write his poetry (Kelsall 171). In “The Destruction of Sennacherib” color plays a huge role in symbolism; green symbolizes the energy, life, and maybe even confidence of Assyrian troops. The color green, Brent Goodman says, “usually reminds us of vitality, freshness, and life.” A few lines later the color quickly fades from green color of spring to colors of the fall symbolizing the death brought upon Sennacherib along with the death of his horse and troops. The color sets a dull and lifeless scene for the rest of Byron’s poem. In “She Walks in Beauty,” Byron uses physical features of the woman to symbolize the beauty of her inner self. Eyes are often thought of as simply an attractive feature of a person, but in this sense Byron is saying eyes but meaning soul. As Anne Marie Hacht points out, “in literature . . . the eyes reveal the heart”…

The Romantic period, year 1785 till 1830 C.E., was a period of great change throughout the world, especially but not only in literary style. This period saw the formation of new countries, new governing styles, and the birth of many new ways of thinking. In this time British Literature was characterized by the work of six major writers, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Percy, Shelly, Keats, and Blake. (Book page 1363-4). Lord Byron, as described by Hipolyte Taine, a French critic of the late romantic, said that Lord Byron was “the greatest and most English of these artists;’ he is so great and so English that from him alone we shall learn more truths…

His poetry had a recurring theme of being romantic. Lord Byron wrote many long romantic poems and some shorter ones in a traditional satirical style of poetry. His poems all varied in their subject matter. A lot of his romantic poems were about the many women he was involved with. An example would be the poem She Walks in Beauty, it is a poem about how beautiful he thought the woman he was in love with was. His poems also were about things he believed in. The poem, The Destruction of Sennacherib, shows that Lord Byron shared his religious views in his poetry. Throughout his travels he went to many places that were inspiration for his poetry. The Lament of Tasso was written when he was in Rome. He visited Tasso's cell, which inspired him to right the poem. His vary in types of poetry and subject matter helped his poetry stay…
