Lord of the Flies Essay Prompts

Essays must contain a minimum of two body paragraphs, with a minimum of two concrete details per body paragraph.

1. Perhaps to create a perfect society was beyond the boy’s capability in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, but could it have realistically gotten better? How did it fall apart, and could the society have been fixed?

Write an essay that discusses what crucial errors the boys made that they actually could have made different and, thus, made a better island society.

2. During pre-election campaigns, Presidential candidates can say absolutely anything about their opponents and their own qualities as leaders, the policies they will champion, and the direction they will lead the nation if they are elected. However, citizens can reach the most reliable evaluation of their Presidential potentials through scrutinizing the established records of their leadership up until now. In Lord of the Flies, if Jack and Ralph’s tribes were countries and they the nations’ leaders, judging by their records, which boy would make the best national leader?

Write an essay that discusses whether Jack or Ralph would make the best national leader in terms of personal freedoms, environmental policy and labor/industry. Be sure to base your judgment on their established records (what they have actually DONE in the novel) and not what they say.

3. William Golding has said that his novel Lord of the Flies was symbolic from the beginning until the end when the boys are rescued. During the course of the novel these symbols are constantly changing, giving us a new interpretation of the island society.

Write an essay that discusses three different significant symbols from the book. Explain the significance of the symbol, why it is symbolic and how over the course of the novel that symbol changes. Make sure to explain why the changes to the symbol are significant to the interpretation of the novel. (remember symbols can be both

The novel, Lord of the Flies draws in realistic political views in relation to the author, William Golding’s concept. Golding adopts contrasting views of leadership and quarrels between leaders to attempt to properly represent the national government leadership. The United States government leader, President Obama once said “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek” (Brain Quotes 1). He instilled a concept of self production, hands-on leadership and not to wait for change. The exact same concept was expressed in depth in Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding uses a deep inner character contrast in order to reveal their individual style of governing. The author customizes his writing to show the power within Ralph and Jack which are driven by inner moral and reasoning for Ralph, and for Jack a sense of dictatorship and holding utter control. All in all, Golding approaches the concept of leadership from an angle perceived by the reader to be an honorable way of living--Ralph and an unfit…

There are two types of leaders: one who makes the right choice and one who chooses the popular decision of the people even though it might not be the right choice. Rosalynn Carter expresses this idea perfectly by quoting, “A leader takes the people where they want to go. A great leader takes the people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the great leader while Jack is just another leader. Throughout the book, Ralph leads with rationality and sense, while Jack leads with fear, which shows that fear is all controlling. Golding conveys that fear is all controlling through Ralph’s leadership, Jack’s priorities, and Jack’s leadership.…

Civilization is the key to keeping society in order. If many individuals lose this civilized state, the society they are in begins to break down. Ralph, Simon, and Jack are the major problems with the breakdown of their society. Anything done in a community, whether it is multiple actions or nothing at all, can change it for better or for worse. Firstly, Simon is inactive in the social order of the boys and isolates himself from them. Secondly, Ralph has attained leadership over everyone which sets Jack’s leadership off. Ralph tries to bring order to the island which in turn causes a breakdown and defect of a group of boys. Lastly, Jack is the main point that caused their society to breakdown. One of the bigger – but not the biggest – problems in a social order breakdown is people who do not take part in the control.…

Symbolism is the author's sneaky way of tying the story's action to its theme. Cleverly placed throughout the story, these symbols can be found if the reader takes a closer look. In William Goldings The Lord of the Flies, a school of boys plane-crash onto a deserted island and become stranded there. The boys slowly begin to lose their minds and start turning into animal-like savages. Golding uses symbols throughout his story, most of them having biblical similarities. The three most important symbols in the novel are The Lord of the Flies, Simon, and the Beast.…

“Jack made a rush and stabbed at Ralph’s chest with his spear. Ralph sensed the position of the weapon from the glimpse he caught of Jack’s arm and put the thrust aside with his own butt. Then he brought the end round and caught Jack a stinger across the ear. The were chest to chest, breathing fiercely, pushing and glaring.”(196). Two strong types of leadership can lead to devastating outcomes. This is shown in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Ralph and Jack have two very different types of leadership that are at different ends of the spectrum. The qualities of Ralph and Jack are different, Jack’s beliefs contrast those of Ralph, and the styles of leadership that Ralph and Jack use are as different as night and day. To begin, it takes different qualities to make a leader. Some of these qualities include sensibility, responsibility, and maturity. First, sensibility is very important when it comes decisions. Jack explains, “I am going off by myself.”(140). By making rash decisions, Jack is showing the lack of sensibility in his leadership. Ralph tells the boys, “I’ve been along. By myself I went, think what’s what. I know what we need. An assembly to put things straight.” (84). Ralph, using common sense, makes his decisions wisely and does what he thinks is best for all of the boys. Second, to be a strong leader one of the qualities you must obtain in responsibility. Ralph shows responsibility over Jack. Responsibility being accountable for one person’s actions. Ralph shows responsibility when he stands up for Piggy when Jack and his tribe takes his glasses. Ralph was somewhat at fault for creating the two different tribes, so when Jack’s tribe takes Piggy’s glasses for fire, he takes responsibility for his actions and goes to retrieve the glasses. Jack does not show responsibility because he does not take accountability for his actions. Jack only cares for himself so when he takes Piggy’s glasses, he does not give them back, even when Ralph tries to ask for…
