Simon, in document E, is trying to figure out what exactly the beast is, “Then he sets off, weak and staggering, to tell the other boys that the beast is human.” When he goes to tell the boys, he is mistaken for the best. The boys then brutally kill him, “There are no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws.” Stated in document F. The only boy on the island that understands the truth about humans, tries to save them from their self-destruction. Throughout the book, Simon represents a Jesus-like figure. He helped Ralph with the shelters, handed ʻlittlunsʼ food and was very perceptive about the true meanings of the world. When the boys believed in the beast, he was the only one who knew the truth, ʻmaybe there is no beast . . . maybe itʼs only usʼ (Golding pg 111). Simonʼs death represents the idea that goodness is weaker than evil. The murder of Simon is the point of no return for civilisation on the island and shows that even decent people like Ralph and Piggy are capable of committing heinous crimes. The beginnings of the idea of the beast occur, when Ralph, having been chosen by the group of boys as their leader, is now taking on his role, with an increasing confidence. He is assuring the ‘littluns’ that they will ‘have a good time’ on the island. Ralph explains that the island has everything that they could possibly need. At this point, a six year-old boy, distinguished only by a mulberry-coloured birthmark on his face, allows the seeds of apprehension, on the subject of the beast, to be planted in the boys’ minds. The little boy, with the help of Piggy, who encourages him to speak and interprets what he is saying, tells the assembly of boys that he is scared of ‘a snake-thing’. He believes that the beast turns into one of the jungle creepers during the day but becomes a snake or ‘beastie’ at nightfall. When he arrives, he discovers that it is indeed a dead parachute guy. Rushing back down the mountain to tell the others, Simon loses his footing and begins to crawl. The other boys see this mysterious object crawling out of the forest. Out of fear, the boys think that the object is the beast and start to beat it. The initial order of the boys is all a result of Piggy realizing the value of the conch shell, which marks Ralph out as the leader and is the symbol of democracy throughout the book. Piggy sets the boys on a clear course back to civilization, and the glasses he wears start the fire that should deliver the boys safely home.
