Lord Of The Flies Mask Analysis
My mask was based off of the movie “Predator”. In the movie the character hunts aliens. So I thought this would be a good representation for Jack and his hunters in the book the “Lord of the Flies”. I came to this choice not only I've been wanting to make a mask like this but because the look and feeling of the mask has a dark and threatening look to it. Just like Jack because at one point of the story, Jack kills a pig and thinks that slitting its throat is funny. Showing how dark he is.
Each part of this mask has a meaning or representation from the book. I used long strips of black paper the show the scraggly and dirty hair of the boys because they don't wash themselves. The three red dots stand for the boys grouping around the pig in the

In the novel, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, he tells the story of a group of boys stranded on an island. During World War II, a plane filled with young boys got shot down which led the young survivals on a deserted island without any adults. The young boys decide to have a leader who can willingly lead the group to survival. Ralph is chosen to be the leader, yet after a series of events maybe Ralph wasn't a good choice after all. I believe Ralph is the reason of the development of their savage society. Ralph takes responsibility for the island’s decline because his poor leadership skills result in nothing getting done and the young boys breaking into groups rather than cooperating like they should have been…

Everyone around us wears masks to hide who they truly are. For example , politicians wear masks to get the majority of votes to win. Not only in real life but in literature, characters wear masks as shown in "Hopfrog" by Edgar Allen Poe and "The Devil and Tom Walker" by Washington Irving. The King and the Seven ministers and Tom walker wear masks in these two stories. Regardless of how hard one tries to conceal his/her darker traits and/or motives, the truth always comes out in the end.…

As the novel progresses, the two main characters have changed in their characteristics, which show the fault in civilization through temptation and human nature using symbolism for each individual. At first, Ralph and Jack got along with teamwork and split their parts and works among the boys. During the building of the rescue fire, Jack and Ralph were working together to lift up a log to the fire, “Together, joined in the effort by burden, they stammered up the last step of the mountain. Together, they chanted One! Two! Three! and they crashed the log on to the great pile” (Golding 39). This quotation uses the repetition of the word “together” because the author is trying to express the positive relationship between the two boys. This passage also symbolises the beginning…

The plot of the story helped develop the theme of never giving up by providing challenges like the failiure of the fire. When the littluns spotted a "beast" it distracted the older boys from the task at hand but they were able to resolve that there was no such thing but many little ones did not believe that. As I said this posed a obstacle to go around because of the distraction. The plot also developed the theme by the ship that passed while the fire was out. It made Ralph more aware and work harder at his goal to get rescued. Another sign of the plot developing the theme is Piggy always being pushed away from everything but he still keeps on trying to get into all the action so he is stopping at nothing to be a part of the group.…

n the novel Lord of the Flies from Golding, dictates a very immature point on everyday society and life as if what we are is an illusion and without a solid civilization we’re able to make immoral decisions. As the boys develop they guarantee this eventual downfall because of their human nature and lack of civilization and society. Golding implements this idea of a downfall from the start of the novel making the un inhabited island full of males and no females.…

In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, the motif of savagery emerges throughout the book in different forms. Although there are many forms of savagery in the book, masks play an integral role. Throughout the course of the book, a character’s savagery evolves when a mask is applied, and the boys that do not put on masks remain civilized. Masks have the ability to twist a civilized human into a wild savage.…

Throughout literature, certain things are considered to mean something beyond themselves; these symbols make themselves ever present in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. While some symbols appear in an obvious fashion (the glasses, the pig’s head) others like to hide from the reader (the fire, the conch shell). From Piggy’s introduction into the novel, they symbolize of his glasses seemed apparent. The glasses symbolize a voice of reason and logic within the boys, and once Jack took Piggy’s glasses from him and started the fire all the logic dissipated. The shell symbolizes an organized civilization within the boys. As they search for someone a leader, they notice Ralph – one of the oldest in the bunch – holding the conch shell. Since they dubbed Ralph leader “They obeyed the summons of the conch, partly because Ralph blew it, and he was big enough to be a link with the adult world of authority” (Golding 50). The fire symbolizes both the hope of rescue and an innate destructive change and reentrance into a primitive state within the human mind. The pig’s head symbolizes the aggression which Jack harbors toward everything as it becomes more and more dominant throughout the novel, but the pig’s head also becomes a symbol of the savagery and bloodlust of the boys near the end of the novel.…

The conflict consisted of Civilization versus savagery. In one group the influence of Ralph was a sense of order and everyone lived by rules. The influence of good beliefs and values generated these boys from committing sinful crimes. In Jacks group, the boys were influenced by evil. They are not wearing masks of paint, but are regardless wearing masks that cloud their sense of reason and identity. Ralph’s mask is his growing hair, which he constantly pushes back throughout the novel. His hair signifies the change of his character throughout his time on the island, his rationality slowly crumbling. Ralph succumbs to his mask when he participates in the hunt and in the murder of Simon. Piggy, who is described to have little hair that doesn’t grow, has a unique mask from the rest of the boys. It is his broken pair of specs. Initially used to aid his vision, Piggy’s mask is the reverse of the boys’ masks. The lack of his mask is what causes his moral demise. Piggy is blind in one eye after the lens breaks on one side, which can be perceived as a partial loss of reason. After his glasses are broken, Piggy has moments in which he loses his cool: “Ralph, they out to shut up, oughtn’t they? You shut up, you littluns” (Golding 83)! He also participates in the feast and the brutal…

Jack is speaking to Roger in this instance as he first thinks up the idea to cover himself in clay and charcoal sticks because he believes that the only reason he is not successfully killing any pigs is because they see him too quickly. Jacks mask not only changes his appearance but also his personality. “He began to dance and his laughter became a bloodthirsty snarling […] the mask was a thing of its own, behind which Jack hid, liberated from shame and self-consciousness.” (Golding 64) With the mask on his face, Jack was no longer the leader of the choir instead he was a sage hunter. Later on in the novel, almost all the boys want to have their faces painted as well “They understood only too well the liberation into savagery that the concealing paint brought.” (Golding 172) The mask represents the evil within each and every boy who had their face painted. In other words, it portrays the savage within. It does not hide the children’s true nature; it rather reveals…

Masks are considered "functional works of art" and play a social purpose in Africa. They are used in storytelling and ceremonies and are made to be worn over the head rather than cover the face. This technique is also used in The Lion King so that the human facial expression is not lost and to support the beadwork, corsets and armor used to show the human qualities of a lion. The costumes on the other hand are made of silk cloth to hide the human form, break the shoulder line and to enhance the powerful joints and thighs. The masks are made in such a way that the actor can control the facial expression of the mask through cables attached to their sleeves. Costumes and masks are also used to show the development of the character as they progress through out the story. Young Simba's costume is not as intricate as Scar's to show that, Scar has an underlying plan whereas Simba is innocent.…
