In a functioning society, laws are necessary to govern behaviour and make equal opportunities for everyone. The movie Lord of the Flies clearly exemplifies the need for laws and how laws must be enforced t be effective. Without laws anarchy would surely ensue as explored through “Lord of the Flies”.
Anarchy is the state of disorder due to a poor system of law or poor enforcement of the law, in Lord of the Flies Ralph, who was the ‘leader’ creates a set of laws without enforcement. Jack does not agree with Ralphs morals and disobeys them leading to his eventual secession from the group, having a divided nation with two different sets of rules with no way to enforce them leads to overall anarchy with the ‘Biguns’ resorting to stealing and eventually murder.
The boys stranded on the island came from the United States and this governed their morals and customs. The boys developed their own customs over the time they were on the island as well, for example the ‘biguns’ did not associate with the ‘liddlies’ also the younger boys were expected to obey all orders from the older ones, especially in the ‘biguns’ group. Another custom that was adopted by Jack and his group was the wearing of blood and mud on their faces to prove their allegiance to the group. At the beginning of the movie it was possible for Ralph to establish laws for the entire group of boys to abide by however this did not last for long because he had no way of enforcing laws and could not decide laws that everyone agreed on, once the group separated into two packs laws could not be made because their could not influence everyone in the state. The laws established in the first half of the movie made it easier to function as roles were assigned and every boy was on the same page, the rule that anyone holding the conche could speak and be listened to with respect was an important law which allowed every boy to have a say.
The boys, and especially Ralph, attempted
