The theme I am going to talk about in my essay is the boys loss of innocence. In the beginning the boys seem to have the situation under control but as the book goes on they start to lose thier morals.
In chapter one of the book William Golding describes the setting of the area. The boys were stuck on a small island on thier own with no adults. They needed to take care of themselves until they could be spotted and rescued by a ship or boat passing by. This caused the boys inner personality to be brought out. Jack shows his leadership qualties in the novel and is elected to be the leader of the group. Piggy is smart and thinks logically, but is shy and most of the other boys don’t take him seriously. Ralph wants power and authority but for the wrong reasons, and Roger shows no signs of good within him and likes to see others suffer. Although all of the boys have some evil inside them and his brought out towards the end of the novel.
At first when Ralph is leader he suggest they should come together and discuss “No, we’re having a meeting. Come and join in.” This shows order and peace among the boys and are handling the situation well. This then goes on to having only one person speaking at a time “hands up, like at school” and the idea one can only speak while holding the conch.
Jack says to the other boys “We are not savages, We are English.” This shows that Jack thinks everyone who lives in England are not savages and are very civilized. Later on in the novel Jack loses repsect for being English and the other boys "bollocks to the rules." This shows that Jack and the other boys are becoming more and more savage and is starting to take over them. When Jack first was unable to kill the pig, becomes more obsessed. When Jack was meant to be making sure the fire stay lit while Ralph was away, he decided to go hunting for the pig.
