Lord of the Flies-Symbolism
Symbolism is defined as the representation; treatment or interpretation of things as symbolic. In society and in particular, literature, symbolism is a prominent component that helps to illustrate a deeper meaning then perceived by the reader. Symbolism can be anything, a person, place or thing, used to portray something beyond itself. It is used to represent or foreshadow the conclusion of the story. In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies symbolism of the main characters Ralph, Jack and Simon plays a very important role in helping to show how our society functions and the different types of personalities that exist. An examination of Simon as a symbol of good, Ralph as a symbol of the common man, and Jack as a symbol of evil, clearly illustrates that William Golding uses characters as a symbol of what is really happening in the outside world throughout the novel. First off, the common man is someone who has a balance between good and evil, a good perception of reality and strong morals. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the character who is perceived as this type of individual. The first example of this is Ralph’s appearance. Ralph keeps and continues to wear his school sweater while other boys run around naked. This illustrates his desire to keep the island somewhat civilized. Secondly, he does everything in his power to keep the boys working together and getting along with each other. Lastly, Ralph attempts to keep the boys under a type of domesticated. He tries to do this by making such laws as the freedom of speech. This law gave any member of the group a right to express his opinion. Unfortunately, Ralph’s attempts failed and the boys became savages. Secondly, the evil side of a person is an unavoidable thing. It can be suppressed but also can take over a person. Although everyone has an evil side, some have a harder time controlling it then others. The character of Jack was the representation of evil in the novel. First,

Symbolism is something that many others use in their writing to give meanings without coming out and saying it. The dictionary states symbolism as “the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations as artistic imitation or invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible truth or states.” When authors do this it lets readers get different ideas as what they mean as they read the story, which makes them think a lot more as they read the story. This story has a lot of symbolism, most of it…

Lord of the Flies by William Golding has a plethora of literary techniques and strengths integrated within itself that separates it from other novels and work in tandem with the plot to form an enjoyable novel. A significant technique used in Lord of the flies is its multitude of motifs. Two of these many motifs include power and savagery and are brought up many times in the novel. The use of these literary techniques are to emphasize the insanity the boys on the island go through. In our pastiche we wrote an alternate ending to Lord of the flies if there was an adult figure arbitrarily inserted to temporarily offset the balance of power and insanity.…

The main allegory for Lord of the Flies is that without civilization, savagery takes over. The Lord of the Flies and the Beast are not really physical characters. It is the evil that is in every human being. Without civilization the boys unleashed this evil. Piggy stood for intellect which every civilization needs, when he died it showed that savagery had completely taken over. Also Simon stood for morality, but not because civilization told him to be moral, but because he knew that morality was natural. But this book shows the allegory that savagery is stronger and more natural than civilization, this it took over. As seen throughout, Golding uses Jack to depict the evil side of humanity and symbolizes every man’s wickedness. Jack had a desire and jealous intent to be chief. As can be seen “I ought to be chief”, said Jack with simple arrogance (22). That shows humanity’s want for power. His fetish with killing and trying to make himself a killer was always showed. Seen in a conversation with Ralph when Jack replied “Hunters” (23). He always wanted to hunt and kill whatever he could…

What would you do if your plane crashed on a deserted tropical island surrounded by the isolation of the ocean and strangers whom you’ve never met? In William Goldings Lord of the Flies, a group of boys, the oldest of them being twelve, crash among an inhabited, untamed island where they're forced to adapt, survive, and make life altering choices. During the course of the story the author uses symbolism to express hidden emotions within the characters themselves, and emotions that could draw the reader in and really experience what is happening to these young boys, including a conch, glasses, and an evil beast.…

The beast represents the fear of the boys in the group and the uncertainty as this is intensified when it plays a part in the story. There is also the idea of the beast being ‘the gateway to chaos’ with everything on the island uncontrollable when the subject it raised. The imaginary beast I think also symbolises the savage nature that lives just a word away inside the boys and while the boys are afraid of it, this could only be because it is inside every one of them. Simon is the one who actually realizes that the beast is in each one of them when he meets “The Lord Of The Flies” As boys like Jack become crueler throughout the book, the belief in the beast increases until at the end Jack’s tribe are leaving it food as a sign of respect.…

“Symbolism is no mere idle fancy or corrupt egerneration: it is inherent in the very texture of human life” This is a quote from Alfred North Whitehead, an English philosopher from the early 90s, that explains that symbolism is not a pointless past time, but rather it is a part of human structure. The very existence of the human species is based solely off its ability to survive, the first society of humans where not so gifted as man is today for they had to fight and kill in order to live another day. It was eat or be eaten in there world. Nowadays, man is taught, at a very young age, that he must always act accordingly or in a civilized manner thus concealing his ancestral dark side. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies there are many…

Lord of the Flies is a powerful novel with symbolism throughout. Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. For example, in the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst’s, the color red is simply just a color if you think logically. But however in “The Scarlet Ibis” the color red represents blood and the bleeding tree.…

William Golding began his writing career after serving in the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom during World War II, and gained global recognition with his 1953 novel Lord of the Flies. The book was a response to Robert Ballantyne's brighter, Victorian era story Coral Island, in which British boys bring civilization to an island of savages. Golding's own take on the deserted island tale revolves around his belief that there is a malevolent side of human nature that is only kept at bay by our perception of civilization. The chances of rescue for the boys in Lord of the Flies faded with their will to control their darkest urges, and they regressed into a tribe chasing violent pleasure. Golding conveys the transition of the kids with a combination…
