This is not a quick process and will take time to mold each associate into a perfect tool for loss prevention. At my store, I started by figuring out who the better, more productive associates were. These associates would be more likely to be able to multitask by doing their job as well as manage the tasks that we ask them to do. Using good time management skills, I would speak to a select few associates that I thought would provide the best results for loss prevention goals. I would talk to them about their job, personal lives, family, pets, hobbies, etc. Doing this was so when I came to talk to them they would not think I was just coming over to talk about loss prevention every time. Once I figured out whom they are and what gets them motivated I was able to use that to get them excited about loss prevention.
After getting to know all of the associates I thought would have the most potential, I would select two or three project associates. These associates I would then take the same approach with but ease them into helping us at a slower rate. I would have them help in the fitting rooms, not necessarily with suspected shoplifters, but with normal customers. This was used as a test and training opportunity to see how the associate responds and what needs to be worked on with that associate.
