The TV show Lost is a story about a group of people who survive a plane crash and end up on a mysterious island. Beyond the premise of the show there are deeper themes that run through out the show. While the first season may have been primarily about the survivors realizing that help isn’t exactly on the way and that they must band together to survive. From the very beginning we begin to see conflicts arise when matters of trust are involved. As the survivors begin to know one another better the skeletons in the closet for everyone are eventually revealed. Examples include when Jack Sheppard, the de facto leader of the group of survivors, found a mug shot of one of the other passengers who was being escorted by a US marshal. Kate was wanted for the murder of her father. Sayid Jarrah, another survivor, was previously a torturer for the Iraqi Republican Guard. James “Sawyer Ford” was a conman who conned couples out of their money; he also left behind a daughter whom he refused to accept in to his life. Needless to say this caused a major point of contention in the aftermath of the crash as many erroneously thought he had something to do with it. Not all of the passengers’ past is as dark though. John Locke was paralyzed from the waist down before the crash on the island. Mr. Eko was a reformed Nigerian gangster turned priest after an accident killed his brother. One thing all these characters have in common is their general path once they get on the island and how these characters’ development portrays the larger theme of redemption.…

    Lost In America Analysis

In Dave Barry’s, “Lost in America”, I feel the narrator was not only expressing his regret for having missed the signs of how deep his mother’s grief ran but, also for a chance to relive those final memories with her as a way of making it seem as she is still alive, even if only for a moment. I also feel he intended for his words to act as a warning to others to watch their own loved ones for signs of depression, especially someone who has gone through a tragedy like Dave’s mother. His mother’s inability to move on or make a commitment to anything after her husbands death were all signs of a deep depression hers sons missed, probably due to their own grief. She was silently telling them she needed help in different ways, unfortunately Dave and his…

    Paradise Lost and Tis Pity

Tis Pity was published by John Ford in 1633 and is set in Italy, the heart of the Renassiance. John Milton published Paradise Lost in 1667, relatively soon after John Ford, and was the first epic poem to be written in blank verse. Both writers push the boundaries of literature by exploring untouched, taboo subjects: incest and The Fall of Man. During this period of time, soon after the Renassiance period, many artists and writers were challenging society by introducing a range of different styles and genres. This meant that Ford and Milton both intended to tempt controversy through their pieces of literature; yet, the seductive choice of language has instead caused an attractiveness to both texts. It is this attraction to the language, and utter skill behind these writer's intentions, that has enabled both texts to withstand the test of time.…

A typical audience tends to support the main character of a serial television show, which can lead to the viewers to be blind to the fact that the protagonist may be becoming the antagonist. Spectators begin to form special connections with the characters and root for their success or their demise, “fans will frequently develop sincere emotional attachments to characters”(Mitell, “Characters in Complex Television” 10). But for those of us who have not invested our time into the fictional world of certain television series like Breaking Bad, we do not have a special connection to any of the characters and do not have a deeper understanding of who they are as figurative people. In season 2 episode 12, “Phoenix”, the alienated viewers of Breaking Bad conjure up ideas of characters from the little bit of information delivered to them, and never experience the true meaning behind Smith’s idea of “engaging character”.…

    Paradise Lost

While watching the HBO Documentary “Paradise Lost”, I saw the horrific murder cases of three second grade boys at West Memphis Arkansas. The suspected murderers were Jessie Misskelley, Jr., Jason Baldwin, and Damien Echols, their ages were seventeen, sixteen, and eighteen. As a motive for the murders the prosecution believed they were performed as a satanic ritual. After an intense trial each of the teenagers were found guilty by the jury, although there was a fairly large lack of evidence. The prosecution was under a great amount of stress from the community and others to find the ones responsible. Damien Echols was given the death penalty, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment plus two twenty-year sentences, and Jason Baldwin was sentenced to life imprisonment. I think the life sentences were appropriate for the crimes they were accused of, if they were in fact guilty of them.…

Media today gives us gender stereotypes. He lived in the rich culture of Rome for almost ten years. After returning to England, he began writing and publishing stories in local papers.
