creation of Stonehenge is a mystery, however there is one speculation that was identified regarding the creation of Stonehenge. It is widely believed the Druids created Stonehenge, but with more research “modern methods of dating objects prove that Stonehenge was constructed well before the Celts arrived on the Salisbury Plain ( located in England) “ (Smagala). This was estimated to be built around 2800 to 1500 B.C. Stonehenge is listed as a mystery for the reasons of not only is the builder's unknown, how was it built is a wonder, but also why was it built is the questions that still remains. It has the potential to be a giant sundial or ritual site,
The Nile is the longest river in the world formed from two rivers emerging, the Blue Nile and the White Nile. “ Over 100 million people rely on the Nile for food, water, and employment in four countries of Africa” ( Insight Guides). The Nile is located in Africa, however Ethiopia, Uganda, and Sudan is equally dependent on the river. The Nile travels across 10 countries, but since the mouth of the Nile is located in Egypt credit is given to Egypt referencing to it being located there. “Upon receiving the official recognition as a natural wonder ( due to stretching 1,432 miles and beating out the Amazon), Uganda Minister of Tourism declared the source as a protected area” (Seven Natural Wonders).
Following the mystery of the Nile is the city of Atlantis.
The great and late philosopher Plato wrote about Atlantis. Atlantis, also known as the lost city is a mythical city described during 300c-1100 B.C. “Some support that the catastrophe of the Minoan civilization and Ancient Thera (Santorini) are strongly connected with the lost Atlantis, but few proves have been argumented for this. It is assumed that Atlantis was probably located somewhere between Europe and America, maybe in the Atlantic Ocean” ("Santorini Island and the Myth of Lost Atlantis .com"). Some historians have little reasons to believe this mythological city may have been located on the island of Santorini. This island was destroyed from a tragic volcano …show more content…
eruption.
Plato wrote about this mythical city in his dialogues Timaeeus and Kritias. According to the myth “ As the Atlanteans grew powerful, their ethics declined. Their armies eventually conquered Africa as far as Egypt and Europe as far as Tyrrhenia (Etruscan Italy) before being driven back by an Athenian-led alliance. Later, by way of divine punishment, the island was beset by earthquakes and floods, and sank into a muddy sea” ("Atlantis - Facts & Summary").
This city is a mystery because there is not enough evidence to lable Atalntis history but there has been some geographical history that draw credit to this myth having the possibility of being a historical fact.
Lastly is the Parthenon. The Parthenon is a temple originally dedicated to goddess Athena. Later it became a Christian church then a mosque before it was destroyed. In 448-432 B.C. “ the Parthenon was designed by the architects Iktinos and Killikrates” (Adams). “Its massive foundations were made of limestone, and the columns were made of Pentelic marble, a material that was utilized for the first time.” ("Parthenon"). The Parthenon was built and remnants still remain in Athens, Greece. The Parthenon is considered one of the seven wonders of Ancient world I believe because not many ancient building converted from a temple dedicated to a goddess, then turned into a Christian church, and finally converted into a mosque. For 25 centuries this historic site made out of marble has also endured being set on fire, shot at, a victim of earthquakes, and objects stolen from. This site was also used to store gun
powder.
