As the film began, most of what I experienced was confusion as to what this had to do with child maltreatment. The Billing parents seemed to show a proper amount of grief when discussing the loss of the two boys in what appeared to be a tragic accident, but they seemed kind, responsible, loving, everything you could wish for in an adopted family, so why would they run away? In this attempt by Chris Billing to find closure, he found himself surrounded by wounds that ran much deeper than he could have imagined. The main secret keepers in this family were the adoptive parents, and we see this have very different effects on the two. To the mother these secrets were kept, in her own words, in order to protect her family socially, as well as, their ability to support them. However, I feel that there is an underlying issue that people want to discuss due to the shame associated with it, which is an aspect of selfishness. Selfishness in that you are putting a child in harms way to protect your self image, because you do not want to be the one who married a child molester, or appear not to have things under control in your own house. Ultimately to me this is just as much an unforgivable crime, as what the adoptive father
